A study by Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Centre at Qatar University showed that the mortality rate in traffic accidents has dropped by 22.2% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

Dr Khalifa Al Khalifa, Director of the centre, and Dean, College of Engineering, Qatar University, said the population increased by 7% between 2010 and 2015, and the number of vehicles exceeded one million, posing a big challenge for the Traffic Department and concerned authorities, Al Sharq reports.

Despite challenges, Qatar succeeded in reducing traffic accidents and related economic and social loses.

Dr Al Khalifa said some motorists commit violations due to their behaviours in Ramadan, which increase the possibility of traffic accidents.

He said there is no big difference in the rate of traffic accidents in Ramadan compared to other months, but there has been a drop year after year.

For example, the centre’s statistics showed that the rate of traffic accidents in Ramadan 2014 had dropped by 42% and the accidents average for the year fell by 7.3% compared to 2013.

The study also showed that the rate of traffic accidents on Fridays in Ramadan is less than 40.2% compared to other days, while it is 38.7% in non-Ramadan days.

The centre urged motorists not to use mobile phone and to give enough safety space between them and other vehicles.
