Testing of Hamad International Airport’s mass transit system in full flow
The Hamad International Airport is one of the best facilities anywhere in the world. And the number of passengers passing through the facility has grown tremendously in recent years.
With the huge spurt in number of visitors, officials are testing out new modes of transportation to efficiently manage passenger movement.
While passing through the international arrival terminal today morning, a mass transit train could be seen making test runs.
While the train was completely empty, with plastic still on the seats, it was still a very imposing sight. The train, which was supposed to be commissioned sometime last year, now seems to finally be ready for testing.
According to the website of Dopplemayr Cable Car, the company providing the coaches, “The silent, beautiful and efficient glass-roofed trains will glide directly through the bustling terminal as HIA becomes one of the biggest and busiest hubs in the Middle East.”
The two trains will consist of five cars each, with it operating independently in the two directions. Each cabin can hold 38 passengers at a time, with 192 passengers being the train’s capacity.
The train’s operating speed is 45kmph. There will be two stations and it can carry up to 6,000 people per hour per direction. It will operate on elevated steel and concrete trusses.
It is not yet clear when the train will be commissioned.
I think the train will be used to shuttle pasengers to and from the gates ...
This will surely help eliminate queues at immigration...
this is still being tested???? i saw this running empty last october!!!
Hey britexpat..This is Qatar and it's first of its kind here. By quoting "testing out new modes of transportation to efficiently manage passenger movement." So nothing new.

Don't they have one of these in Dubai and many other airports ?
Why do we have to wait so long for JOYS? Why wasn't this all part of the much delayed construction of the airport?
"It is not yet clear when the train will be commissioned." Anyhow, joys to all WHEN it is commissioned.
I will be there to try it - joys for the passengers
