Vehicles moving ahead at green lights and stopping in the middle of the road, thus blocking traffic from other directions, is a common sight around the country.

However, Article 72 of the Traffic law, which was introduced just two months ago, has made this an illegal act.

The article states that ‘despite having priority or if the traffic light indicates green, a motorist may not move the vehicle if such (an) act will disrupt or hinder traffic, and whoever has priority may waive such priority if traffic conditions so require.’

Authorities have said that more than 400 violations involving motorists blocking the yellow box at intersections have been recorded since August this year, reported Gulf Times.

“Traffic officials will monitor yellow boxes through surveillance cameras and three images of violating vehicles will be taken. The images will be sent to the violators via Metrash and a fine of QR500 will be slapped on them along with three black points,” First Lieutenant Ahmed Ali Al Kuwari, traffic control officer at the security monitoring department, was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.

The directorate has warned motorists against blocking the yellow box at signallised junctions as it causes accidents and traffic jams.

The yellow area consists of intersecting yellow lines that occupy the common cross-section at signallised intersections, and motorists are prevented from stopping on them in order to facilitate the flow of traffic.

Hassan: those people should've been completely ignored by the rule abiding car before this new law; now with the law in place, the rule following car can pretend that the flashing car doesn't even exist... I'm so happy about this new rule which in fact has been in place since long; looking forward to setting right anyone that flashes at me haha...

An even heftier fine is needed for those who honk and flash from behind the car that is following the rules.
