Turn this feature on to make your WhatsApp account safer than ever before!
Global online messaging service WhatsApp on Friday rolled out a two-step verification process for all devices to enhance the security of users’ accounts.
The company, which Facebook purchased in 2014 in a record $19bn deal, had been working on two-step verification for the past several months.
Two-step verification will prevent intruders from activating and sending messages through WhatsApp remotely, using a user's phone number, without a six-digit passcode.
The code will be required whenever someone logs in to that account on a new device.
The feature had been tested on a small number of phones since November, but is now beginning to roll out on WhatsApp’s Android, iOS and Windows apps.
“When you have the feature enabled, any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp must be accompanied by the six-digit passcode that you choose,” the company said in a statement.
Users can activate the two-step verification process by going into ‘Settings’ and tapping on the ‘Account’ section where they can enable ‘Two-step verification.’
Have you enabled the feature on your phone yet?
short sighted approach, as people may end up purchasing a previously used number, and discover that they are locked out of whatsapp
