Unruly motorcyclists caught and charged with dangerous driving
If you have been in Qatar for at least a few months, you may be aware of the phenomenon of unruly bike riders zipping near you/past you/over you while on Doha’s busy roads.
If that is not enough to give you nightmares, then the one-wheeled tricks some of them perform on roads will certainly give it to you.
But authorities seem to be taking a stricter view on such people as a recent incident shows.
The General Directorate of Traffic Department caught a group of bikers on Al Shamal Road for not using number plates, over-speeding and reckless behaviour which exposed them and other commuters to danger, reported The Peninsula.
Even removal of their number plates did not help them escape from the long arms of the law.
Captain Mohamed Sefar Al Kuwari, of Patrols and Traffic Investigations Department, said the incident was first found in a video posted on social media sites. A probe was soon launched and the offenders were nabbed in less than 24 hours, according to Gulf Times.
“Though there were no number plates on bikes in order to hide the identity of the bikers, the police patrols successfully concluded the mission of rounding them up in less than 24 hours, seized the bikes and initiated legal action,” he explained.
The punishment for driving motorcycle without number plate, or hiding it or placing it on non-designated areas, is confiscation of the vehicle for three months and transferring the drivers to public prosecution. A repeat offender can be jailed for up to three months and fined QR30,000.
