US Secretary of State deems the blockade of Qatar 'unacceptable'

In a recent statement, America's Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has urged Gulf nations to ease their blockade of Qatar, calling the blockade “unacceptable”.

The statement has, of course, raised more than a few eyebrows as it comes after US President Donald Trump’s recent Twitter rant on the subject, taking credit for the Gulf nations’ rift.

He warned that it was hindering the fight against ISIS and causing humanitarian consequences during the holy month of Ramadan.

“We’re seeing shortages of food in Qatar, families are being forcibly separated, and children pulled out of school - we believe these are unintended consequences, especially during this holy month of Ramadan, but they can be addressed immediately.”

He also expressed concern that the blockade is “impairing US and other international business activities in the region.”

Although food shortage is not a ‘humanitarian issue’ currently, the separation of families and the disruption of business and education certainly are great causes for concern, especially in a region so close-knit, with overlapping family ties.

Tillerson emphasised US support for the mediation of the Emir of Kuwait, H H Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah in resolving the crisis. Turkey has reached out its hand in friendship as well, determined that food imports should not be a problem for the country.
