Wasting water can lead up to a fine of QR 20,000
The Emir of Qatar HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has approved amendments in the law of rationalization of water and consumption of electricity in the country.
Wasting water would now be punished with a fine of up to QR 20,000.
According to this law, people in Qatar are prohibited from using a water hose or any other gadget that allows a free flow of water in their gardens or to wash their car. However, car washing companies are exempted from this prohibition.
Also, house owners or tenants will be charged with a fine of up to QR 10,000 if external lights are left on between 7AM and 4.30PM.
Furthermore, residents will also be fined if they ignore a leaking external tap or pipeline without repairing it at the earliest once they receive notification from the authorities concerned.
If a violation is repeated, the fine will be doubled.
Also as per the new amendment, the Kahramaa chairman or the one who represents the chairman has the right to reach a reconciliation on offences mentioned in the law.
However, this must be done before filing a suit in court against the violator or during the hearing, but before a verdict is issued. Reconciliation must be reached against paying half of the maximum fine.
It has also been reported that the water and electricity consumed per person in Qatar is one of the highest in the world. [The Peninsula]
