World’s ‘largest key’ dedicated to refugees around the globe
Qatar set yet another Guinness World Record feat last night for the ‘Largest Key.’
Weighing around 2.7 tonnes, the key is 7.8M long and 3M wide. It beat the previous record (5.5M X 2.6M), held by Cyprus since 2006. The record-breaking key is made of steel from an actual functioning key’s material and proportional dimensions.
The key will be gifted to and will stay in Katara to show the world Katara’s usual support for heritage worldwide.
The gigantic key, dedicated to all the refugees around the world, was unveiled in a spectacular show at the Katara Amphitheatre featuring Palestinian Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf.
“This key symbol is for all the refugees in the world. We want to set a Guinness World Record to say that it’s the right of these refugees to return back home. Actually this is linked particularly to Palestinian refugees.
Around 4,000 people filled the Katara Amphitheatre to witness the unveiling of the enormous key and enjoy the concert highlighted by the performance of the young Palestinian singer who is the first United Nations Relief and Works Agency regional youth ambassador for Palestine refugees.
“Through this event, we hope we would tell the Palestinians, the Arab world and all refugees around the world that one day we’ll have to return to our home,” Wessam Sowelem, General Manager of Ard Canaan Restaurant, told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event.
Ard Canaan, which means ‘Canaan land,’ is a soon-to-open Palestinian restaurant in Katara which has spearheaded the initiative.
“We’re sponsoring this event with the help of Katara and hopefully we’ll succeed to make this key an icon for all refugees.
“We’re happy to do this in Qatar because Qatar has always been supporting refugees worldwide. We appreciate the Qatari government and Katara for the support,” he said.

Random drivel...
Great PR for the new restaurant also ... Pray for the refugees
Yup like I say, nice gesture. But to be honest I still don't get it. Before I get bashed for being negative, I would like to say anything that helps the plight of the refuges is a brilliant idea. I just don't get this key thing though. But it's ok, as long as the relevant people concerned do.
Initially I thought that it might have to do with my Cuban Shotputter..
But then i reread the article - “Through this event, we hope we would tell the Palestinians, the Arab world and all refugees around the world that one day we’ll have to return to our home,”
Nice gesture indeed. Now what does the largest key in the world, ever, unlock?
Excellent, Nice gesture ...........
