Qatar to expand transport network by connecting Al Khor to Al Wakra and other areas
While Qatar’s public transportation has certainly proved itself efficient in transporting millions of passengers this year, it certainly doesn’t stop there. The Doha Metro and potential new water taxis are expected to play a vital role in developing the city’s public transportation system in the upcoming years.
Quoted from Arabic Daily Al Watan, the transport network will potentially deploy water taxis for moving around Qatar. The water taxi network could soon be an option to link eight stations on a route including Al Wakra to Al Khor, through Hamad International Airport, West Bay, Doha Port, Lusail, and Pearl Qatar.
In addition to water taxis, public transportation is anticipated to get an additional network on the Doha Metro which is expected to roll out in two phases.
Doha Metro will add a new Blue Line and extend the existing Red and Green Line to connect with other areas which aren’t currently on the public transport map. By 2050, the combined Lines will connect to Mesaieed City, Industrial City, and Muaither District.
Currently, there are 37 stations spread across three Lines on Doha Metro. This was a part of phase one of the Metro Rail project in Qatar. The rail network is expected to have a total of 60 stations by 2026.
The Green Line is 22 km long and extends the neighborhoods of Al Mansoura and Al Riffa while running through Education City. The Red Line’s 40 km long network connected the coastal areas of Qatar namely Al Wakra and Lusail with stops at Corniche and Legtaifiya (where the tram network begins). The Gold Line with its 11 stops and 14 km length connects Ras bu Abboud and Al Aziziya.
The new Blue Line will be a part of phase two of the Doha Metro project and will be a semi-circular line connecting West Bay, Airport City North, and other neighborhoods along C-ring road.
