Qatar welcomes ceasefire deal in Lebanon
Qatar has welcomed the ceasefire deal between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, which took effect after 14 months of cross-border fighting that has killed thousands of people.
The deal went into force on Wednesday. Under the deal, Israel will ‘gradually withdraw’ its forces from southern Lebanon over the next 60 days, with the Lebanese army joining United Nations peacekeepers in the territory.
Qatar expressed its hope that it would lead to a similar agreement to stop the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip and the Israeli attacks on the occupied West Bank.
“We hope all parties will abide by the agreement, immediately stop military operations, and fully implement Security Council Resolution 1701. We hope the agreement will pave the way for a more comprehensive consensus that will achieve lasting peace and complete stability in the region,” Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The ministry reiterated Qatar’s firm support for Lebanon, its unity and territorial integrity, and its brotherly people.
The Ministry also thanked USA and France for helping reach the ceasefire agreement.
