Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Dubai is shaking investor confidence across the Persian Gulf after its proposal to delay debt payments risked triggering the biggest sovereign default since Argentina in 2001.

not so good news eh :(

And to this end, there are good checks and balances in conservative Qatar. Not perfect, but the striving to reach and maintain a balance is good.

you're welcome,
i am aspiring to "walk the talk" and glad to tell some good results. though the walk is still far from being over and many more challenges lies ahead that needs to be dealt with.
but i'm sincerely hoping that this shall serve as an ecouragement, to whomever believe to make a difference in this life .... and beyond :)
^^ I find no worries in as far as investing in Gulf is concern. But one must make sure he is standing in solid ground and not just sand that could be blown away.
If you are investing on service related ventures, it may work.
But, investing on quick profits and speculation driven thinking of future gains like real estate is now showing its dark real nature. High Risk offers high rewards, but one must be aware first of his level of risk appetite. This type of investments works, yes! But very few can handle the fire and prepared to get burned as well.
For the general crowd, be wise and invest for the long term. It is most prudent to invest on yourself first. Empowerment thru knowledge of the trade will make you wiser.
Goodluck :)
THank you Phoenix, your reply is very wise.
This makes me rethink about my investment plans here in the Gulf Area. But this is not the end..if everybody gets scared and no one seeks good business, that's when the real end kicks in...
Eagle, by dirt-pool I do not refer to the dust. I refer to prostitution, money laundering and the number of most-wanted criminals that hide out over there.
Nothing to say
EM,
i mean retirement from rat-race.
would'nt you like to be your own boss? do whatever you like on your own free time while earning passively from your investment?
by doing so, you'll get to re-unite with your passions somehow side tracked with most of your time being tied up to work mill grind...
i should withdraw my accounts..
Phoenix, agree with saving and learning as much how to invest wisely but why retire early? Challenges and learning opportunities are fun! Semi-retirement only is good...

EagleM,
how about save as much, learn as much how to invest and eventually plan for early retirement?
Phoenix_Rising said save as much as you can... NOW!!!
don't go home cyring and empty handed..."
Hmm.. don't think it would affect us here. Even if it does, if one has a frugal lifestyle, it won't matter either.

Harmagedōn, interesting comment. I read the news while I was offline yesterday - should have come to QL 1st for info. Lol!
"Dubai is and was a dirt-pool where people were living above their standards. Now, they have learned their lesson."
- Only temporarily cos they got burned. Once the dust settles, people tend to forget rather easily. One good thing about their risky endeavour, they have put Dubai on the world map = London, Paris, New York, Hong Kong..
But IMHO, they went a bit too far. Total freedom is anarchy (or at the very least, opens a huge opportunity for abuse leading to serious damage). There was one other thing mentioned in the newspapers (read both GT and Peninsula yesterday) about Abu Dhabi and the other emirates of UAE being concerned about Dubai being a security concern...

Harmagedon - Very true.. Thats what Abudhabi have demanded, if Dubai deffaults the payment of 74billion debt. Infact its much more from these, there was a list of 14 companies including Emirates and Emaar.

Once I pointed into the desert,
Sadly, I found out it is very "hot and arid" every day.
I rather be under a triple jungle canopy!
“terrorists rely on an endless supply of people living in extreme poverty, with no other options in life. The only chance we have to see the end of terrorism, is to end extreme poverty.”
Graduated from Xavier Institute for Higher learning
sometime ago, i said something upon which i compared the sky crapers of dubai against tower or babel.
was it history repeating itself now?
jackfrost, what's the effect you asked?
i really don't know.
and all we can do now is hope that the mess in dubai will not cascade far and wide across the gulf.
as they say, when the big elephant investors get scared, they do run or should i say stampede in heards!
being at the middle of it(stampede) is a scary situation to be in...
and without investors money, oil and gas deep under will not flow to surface to be converted to $$$$$!
Thats the problem when you get too ambitious. Have seen someone pointing to the desert with a dream of building a supercity years back.
Rules are a guideline for intelligent people, but they must be adhered to by idiots.
Small fish has absconded in large numbers, leaving debts of god knows how much. Bigger fish has done the same. Dubai is and was a dirt-pool where people were living above their standards. Now, they have learned their lesson.
Abu Dhabi, wise beyond its years, has taken the intellectual approach and is now slowly exceeding Dubai and will soon own Emaar, Dubai Holding, Emirates Airways and some other major companies. This will allow them to build towards Dubai, and slowly but securely merge their economies becoming one big powerful middle eastern city. Dubai will have to allow this, otherwise the Dubai Sheikhs will be riding camels again within 20 years.
Something along these line.
i saw the headline "Dubai is A Monument to Vanity and Greed".....how appropriate.
although i hoped dubai would fall flat on it's arse, abu dhabi will provide some bailout money so all will be back to normal again.
however the definition of normal is a somewhat loosely used term in this part of the world.
I am always on the safer side....
This is for the big investors. Since I am not one of them, i am safe.
Happy Eid everyone. It's nice a cold here in Blighty..:O)
ha ha ha, I agree - the best idea ever.. :-)

It's not the ultimate remedy, it is an optimal remedy. There are other ways, but they require a brain.
It is the ultimate remedy Gica, i don't know why they made such a big deal about pencillin when alcohol was already there...
What problem? No, friends are not only for problems. You can have them around and have no problems at all, man.
Lol, you see: when any problem occur, first thing as remedy which came in our mind is alcohol. Isn't it funny?
For women is shopping.
Gica, that's because you don't have a wife called Mary.

No, I don't. Never happens...Hehehe...
I know, sandee, you are on the alcohol destruction odysee.
That would be the same, Gica, as if you called your wife Mary, Lana. You know what's gonna happen.
John, Jack all are same to me....

My "don't borrow money" list...no.3: Sandeepkadian.
Gica: JACK!!
Why should I be settling my loans if I am about to lose my job.. I will be more interested in borrowing as much as possible and then doing the Houdini act...
Boston, we have to invest our money.I know a valuable company from Lynchburg, Tennessee 37352 USA , we can buy some shares...The first owner is our good friend, John.
Eid Mubarak Boston
