I'm about ready to tear my hair off!!!

The company I was interviewed by in Qatar told me I would hear back from them in a week with a decision, and the boss assured me that they wanted me on board and I would be contacted within the week. Well...two weeks passed by with nothing from them. Then I gave him a ring to follow up, and he said to wait another week as they were still finalizing details. He sounded reassuring on the phone. However, now its been 3 weeks in all, and I haven't heard back. I have other offers I would like to consider, but would like to hear back from the Qatar company first before making a decision. I'm confused. How long does the hiring process take in Qatar after the interview, and is there anything I can do in the mean time in terms of documentation, attestation, to pass time? I have a bad feeling that I won't hear back from them before the Eid Holidays, ad I can't wait that long. I don't want to keep bothering them by following up again as that would make me sound desperate. Why can't employers put themselves in our shoes once in a while, and realize how hard the waiting game is! All I expect from them is an answer either way...yes you're in/no, your out! Please advise?

Its called hedging! Employers will try to hedge and interview as many employees as possible in hope of getting the cheapest one in.. its terrible but thats the game.. with all the crisis going around in this world, the entire FIs workforce who were layed off in Europe US are coming to Qatar, Abu Dhabi in droves... headhunters are getting 3000 cvs daily from redundent white collars.. things are getting gloomy I am afraid..

Have you ever heard of the phrase, "Never lay down all your eggs in one nest?"

Is the same when looking for employment, always summit your CV to different employers.

Is very unethical for them not to respond to you after all. "LET IT BE" and move on. There is greener pastures to look forward.

I was offered a job in Riyadh on the 1st of August, I received a written offer within 48hrs but 3 months later I had not had anything but excuses from this company. I therefore applied for the job I have here in Doha and within a week had 2 telephone interviews, a week later I was flown out from the UK for the face to face and was made a verbal offer there and then...........2 weeks later I started work here.

A colleague I referred was even faster, I sent his CV in on a Sunday, he had a telephone interview that day, the second on the Monday, flew here on the Wednesday and again was offered the job on the spot. He starts as soon as he can leave his current employment in UK.

I know these are exceptions to the norm as my first paragraph reflects...........

My advice, keep your options open!

The final, formal offer came four months after the interview and we were here three months after that!

Gulfgirl, I too was 'offered' a job after 3 interviews, intense screening etc, around about this time last year.

It took 6 months before they decided to offer the job to someone else - who ended up getting fired.

I hope yours works out.

Are you complaining or sourgraping? All decisions are on you. If the job is really for you, it will surely end up to you. But if it's not intended for you, whatever you do, it won't go to you! Cheer up. as someone said, keep sending hose cv's and hope for the best!

Well, the courtesy of keeping a candidate informed is almost non-existant in this part of the world. So if you are in a position to bargain, jus tell em to come back to you in 'n' no.of days IF they want to employ you. (From own experience I'd say it works)

If you are not , well, play the waiting game and at the same time, keep sending CV's to other companies.

Well I applied for my job in Sept, and im still going through the process. Ive been offered my job but its been 2 weeks since my visa was submitted. They say that it takes 2 weeks to come back if its in Dubai and three if its in Qatar. My guess is as good as yours.. Ive added another three weeks to my visa as i realised that there is no sense of urgency in Qatar. Im supposed to leave the Uk on the 15th Jan. All my visas are being done from Dubai (head office) Lets see how long it takes. Keeping in mind my company is US owned! I was calling them every week emailing them every 2-3 days for an update. Have to say they got back to me all the time. But then again shes American not Qatary!

tnaljam, didn't mean to offend with my COMMENTS. She's coming from the US, where things tend to happen in a much timelier manner than in this part of the world, that's all.

the recruitment proccess take times, you think that aftyer the interview everything is over, but it is not.. guy, im a recruiter, and sometime the recruitment proccess takes one months and sometime in one week. there are a lot of procedures and approvals have to be done before calling back the candidates. regarding the comments from NOTFROMHERE, PLESSE DONT BE GENERALISIC AND OFFENSIVE. IM WORKING IN WESTEREN COMPANY AND I WAITED 2 MONTHS TO CALL ME BACK AFTER THE INTERVIEW.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Baldrick: I am sorry for the torture you must have gone through...I agree it serves them right!

Hussain: Wish you good luck, and I hope you make the best decision! The HR lady I was in touch with is already on vacation, and my potential boss is handling his department's recruitment, or so it seems. So not sure if I should bother him again

notfromhere: how reassuring! 6 months! Oh my, well I guess I can only pray at this point. It's reassuring to know there are fellow Californians in Doha!

colt: I do hope it takes 3 months or less.

Baldrick: I didn't expect them to hire me right away, but they could've thrown an offer at me before the holidays...

I somewhat agree with Colt45. What company in their right mind would hire someone then give them a week holiday immediately.

Did you Google it first?

Gulfgurl, if you're half Arab, then surely you are familiar with Arab time! 3 weeks is nothing in this process. 5 minutes? 3 weeks? It's all the same.

For my hubby, the process took something like 4 months, with the interviews, visits, negotiating etc. Or was it 6 months? Can't even remember any more. (We came from CA too) :-)

Yes, keep in touch with them, but no, don't expect to hear before the Eid holidays.

Take some time to explore your other options while you wait.

Good luck.

I for one don't think you will hear from them before Eid, everyone is in the holiday mood already... besides, it depends on the company you interviewed with... with some of them it could take upto 3 months until you get here... but i hear ya when you say you don't wanna sound desperate... look at the other options you have and then decide...

I echo your feelings and point of view regarding employers of Qatar. I worked in India for 5 years and always got a spot offer. But the trend is pretty different here in Doha.

Most of the employers took couple of days for me to extend an offer. I got an offer from one of the latest telecom company in Doha and from one of the oldest qatari organization. Now i am confused, which one i must select.

I suggest you to send an e-mail to the HR and let them know you can not wait for a long time and willing to join them ASAP. Hope, they understand ur situation and provides you updates.

regards

Sorry, this seems to be the way in Qatar.

I came here over a year ago for an interview. It went great. Hit it off with the interviewer, and his Qatari boss, and the Qatari woman from HR. The guy even told me at the airport as I was leaving that he looked forward to working with me .... then nothing! I later found through a friend already working there that they gave the job to someone else but they didn't have the courtesy to call and tell me this fact!!!

I've since found that the guy they hired is useless. Serves them right :O)

My advise look elsewhere while you still can.
