Internet Security in Qatar

Every parent knows that the Internet is a powerful resource that can connect his children to the rest of the world, bringing valuable information almost instantly that was once only available in libraries. But parents also know that if not monitored, the Internet can expose children to harmful images and information. What can government do to help protect Internet users from harmful content?

ictQATAR is in the process of developing a policy for governing Internet services in Qatar. ictQATAR will soon be launching an online consultation to receive feedback from the public on how Internet services within the State of Qatar should be kept safe and secure. Surely you mean he was hard trying? ;)

Programs like net nanny etc can block sites, also you shouldn;t be letting your kids unsupervised on the net anyway.

Can they unblock all the car child safety websites while they at it ;)

Indeed. Heaven forbid we should stumble upon EsSEX, SusSEX, WesSEX and I won't even highlight Scunthorpe!

In all my years of web searching I've NEVER stumbled upon a porn site by mistake!

"What can government do to help protect Internet users from harmful content?"

How about getting Qtel to put filters in place to stop us seeing the web sites that are bad?

It would be great if Qtel and the government could decide which sites are bad because I am incapable of making the choices myself.

Towards the end of the full article they state "filtering is not censorship". Well I beg to differ any restrictions on the media is a form of censorship, you can play with semantics but the result is the same. It means some government official is thinking for the individual, not the individual thing for themselves.

Of course a country can choose to implement these measures and of course nobody will try to "bypass" the system as we are all such well behaved proles.

However, it is other countries and the free media that will comment and the public opinions in those countries will draw their own conclusions about censorship.

My other concern is the use of these forums by an organisation that in effect may censor us. Are they using the forum for propoganda purposes or not? We can all decide on that for ourselves as our minds are not censored sorry filtered .......Yet!!

Grrrrr, everyone is gonna get on their high horse over this one and block even more of the internet. Self regulation is the best method. If you are too weak to choose which sites to visit and which not to don't even go online!

As for children there are software means to regulate their viewing without having to rely on a third party.
