Hello everyone, I have a problem... I've been in Doha for about 2 months now and I am having trouble finding a job. I am an American with work experience. I am applying to a good amount of Jobs and Im not getting any calls back. Now many people said "dont worry everyone gets lazy during Ramadan/Eid" which is fine but I am starting to believe that many companies dont even check their e-mails. Because when I called a company that I already sent my CV to.. the person said that they never received anything. All the companies I applied to are Qatari Companies.. most start with a Q. Is there a site or anything that I can find international companies in Doha? In the marketing field if thats possible. But at this point any job will do, I came here for work, not to sit down at the beach. Also in the US we usually apply at the actual company, there is online applications but if you are physically at the company it shows more character, can I do that here? or would they just throw me out and say "go apply online"? Thank you for your time.

Really? Thats your theory? I've been born and raised in New Jersey. My family moved here two years ago and I just moved with them for the great opportunities that I've heard about. So think before you type.

As for everyone else, thanks for your honesty and thanks for your advises. I appreciate it.

... other wise he would not have come to this country without a job, like we Asians do - coming on a visit or business visa and search for a job.

askme, sadly I agree with everything you have said, well put.

regarding jobs, companies do have their own online recruitment. QP does for sure, that's how I got my job.

If you want a chance at a decent job you need to go home and get recruited.

Making local contacts in the industry you want to work in. Meet senior managers or people who can introduce you to managers who do the hiring. Or work with a recruiter.

Good luck!

Goodness sakes, you expect a job after two months of applying in a small, unfamiliar job market? If you were a highly experienced professional it could easily take 9-18 months to find a suitable position in a world-wide market! Go home, dear. If you really like Qatar, apply from there. (Have you tried the US universities? They may need some bi-lingual support staff.) BTW, when they say they didn't receive your CV? That's a polite way of saying "no."

"...not to sit down at the beach."

Great! We need a bit of an extra teaboy/helper in my company as somehow our recent teaboy is getting lazier these days.

And take note: I'm working on an international company in Doha.

No joke.

Are you fine with a basic salary of 1200QRs for the job offered?

There is a recession world wide.. It is very difficult for recently qualified or those with short experience to get jobs.

I tell, after reading whole topic, and each post.

I agree what novita wrote for you and also shazbat.

Emailing not always works. I say, reference works, not just any, but a good one. I've been too in the same position now, but hopefully things work out for everyone, inshAllah!

keep trying!

1. Keep your CV short and simple.

2. Dont email it, take it in personally and try and make an appointment with the person with 'wasta'

3. Network as much as possible.

Getting a job in Qatar is like the UK and USA was in the 50's, it's all about who you know, word of mouth and wasta!

You have two problems.

1. You have no experience

2. You are not Qatari

Most of the Q companies went through huge expansion over the last 10 years but now not so much. So are having a big drive to recruit locals and only highly experienced expats for critical roles.

I'm sorry my friend but I am not surprised you have struggled to find a job. Best advice is to go back home, get 3 or 4 years of experience and then try again.

Qatar is small place which is still under construction(I mean lots of construction work going on...) but if you think that you can secure any job in these area then you are wrong...

Firstly as a told is job market in Qatar is very small and most of workers are labour here and also from the poorest countries of the world like Nepal, Sri Lanka, India etc.

There are many reasons for hiring such people

1. Back in those countries there is political and economic problem so that Qatar labour market can get full advantage of that ( low salary, mistreatment, abuse etc)

2. Want to make them work like animal and not pay salaries for months and months.

3. Give them minimal living standard ( live like cats and dogs in labour camps)

4. Mentality of Arabs is to save as much as possible no matter even on cost of human life.

5. American have base here in Qatar (so human right has no meaning here... Americans - I pull the oil... I am happy ... Qatar- you abuse the labour, you be happy)

And many more.......

Visit Qatar, Stay in there, go around... visit construction sites, visit labour camps, meet those people, visit offices, meet people, managers.... you will find other side of picture which is never published on Internet of strictly controlled media of Qatar.

you shouldnt come here without a job in hand. Most expats in Doha being recruited from their home country. Hence they get the expat perks like flight, schooling, medical etc.

there in person, they will tell you to "apply online"

there may be small scale companies, who may entertain you, but they will not give you an "american salary"... they may offer an asian salary.

hope you find the job

but here you have to search "real serching " not by e-mail only.

not all companies depend on e-mails or faxes , and some people try to hide these CV to put the people they want in their companies, plus the financial crisis

ooh one more thing , you mentioned your nationality as an advantage or extra bonus , weird right?
