Technology in Qatar?

Hi everyone,
I have a topic I wanna share with you. What do you think of the technology in Qatar?
Is Qatar really a "Knowledge society", a term that I read in the papers?
I keep reading about plans to make Qatar really techno-savvy and since I am new in the country, I was wondering how is it like here.

No... Nothing will improve unless and until change their mind. Indians, Sri Lanka, Nepali, Pakistani (90% here) cannot make Doha another UK, USA or NZ, if this was the case then Indian, Filipino could be not here rather Americans and Canadians would be in India and Filipine... Woke up, see around what is going around.... Don't day dream!

Mina, as long as telecoms are monopoly (right now), they are bad.

There is not GPRS in whole country.

Internet is not working properly in most places.

Customer service is bad.

Price is high.

They need competition in order to improve services, lets see what happen when Vodafone start to work. I hope it will change...

War looking for peace,

is like fornication looking for virginity.

I guess telecoms, too are part of the technology in a country. What do you guys think of the telecom services in Qatar? Not in terms of customer service only, I mean the signal quality, coverage, prices...?

I guess the amount of money Qatar spends in building fountains and importing fake grass for the "round abouts"

.. if they use it wisely we could have a cheaper and effective technology services. atleast coudl let you book movie tickets over the internet :)

My impression is that Qatar is not going to have a future as Dubai is. Really... I think if we come back here in 15, 20 years.... this place will be history.

Even in Saudi where the internet is even more restricted in content than here you can get a half decent connection at a half reasonable price, but that is mainly down to having multiple ISPs. Granted they all use STC's backbone, but at least you have a choice. Here in Qatar there is Q-tel, and that's it!

The same can be said for mobile phones, taxis, you name it. Here it's monopolies all the way :o(

The major issue with Qatar at the moment is that they're investing too much money and not looking at logistics - look at Qatarisation, that's a load of bollocks when you see that many Qataris don't even have the motivation. Some of the women are really motivated and want to get on in life but society restricts them (having said that that can be seen in other countries too not just in Qatar). But yeah, the problem is technology here is slowly creeping in but not enough trained skills for them all.

Well, I am not an expert, but my guess is that they just dont have skills and when they finally get it - as everything else - they dont really care about quality, as long as they can sell it.

I think it serves for everything here in Qatar, concepts as customer service, quality, customer satisfaction... they dont know, they dont care about. They try to make things look very "official" but they dont put time and effort on what really makes the difference. Quality.

I came from a few years of professional experience in construction and I am scared of what I see here. They wanna run before they learn how to walk.

Buy why is that?

Is it a lack of awareness, services, regulatory authority?

And what about telecoms in the country?

Mina:)

Until they sort out good quality, fast, cheaper internet connections, not really!

The whole region is desperately lagging behind in this respect. There are less developed nations have a better connection for pennies!
