Aquarium plants and other accessories

Hello,

I have recently bought an aquarium and I have started the cycling of the tank with 5 platies and 10 neon tetras. I have a 60 gallon tank (225 litres).

I am a lover of angel fish and plan to get a few in my tank after the cycling is over, so I wanted to ask what aquarium plants are suitable for this and any recommended shops that are fair in price also?

I have a few questions too:

1- I am thinking that I will not need any heaters as the weather is hot around here, but how about in winter (especially as angel fish need around 24C)?
2- Any non-canned fish food sold around here?
3- Anyone raising discuss with angel fish?

Thanks...

You MUST pay Aqua Art a visit just to watch the stands they have. I assure you, you will not want to leave at all!

If you are an fish raising hobbyist then you are missing a lot.

My tank now looks different and special... well for a starter anyway.

I will send pics for everyone to see.

Note:

1 tetra neon died (at the start of the nitrogen cycling) and 2 got eaten by the angelfish...

If a fish can fit into another one's mouth, then most probably it will... :-)

I have participated in an angelfish forum and posted some pics of my aquarium up until before visiting Aqua Art:

Hello,

Thanks to all of you.

I have finished cycling the tank and the angelfish are all OK. I bought some live plants (amazon sword) from Souq Waqif.

I paid AQUA ART a visit and I must say this:

IF AQUA ART IS A LOCAL AQUARIUM STORE, THEN THERE ARE NO OTHER AQUARIUM STORES IN DOHA, JUST LAZY ATTEMPTS!

The place is fantastic, super and amazing. Staff very helpful and informative and prices are NOT EXPENSIVE!

I bought fish food, accessories, natural plants, natural driftwood and planted natural driftwood as well as gravel, brine shrimp eggs (to hatch live food and feed my angels), anti-chlorine solution (total = 273 QAR and got a 23 QAR discount at the end). All products are top of the range!

You MUST pay them a visit just to watch the stands they have. I assure you, you will not want to leave at all!

Having a heater helps in maintaining a constant Temperature when the AC is ON and especially after water change.

Hi,

You can't keep Neons with Angels or discus ,as they grow bigger they will surely eat the neons. You could try keeping some cardinals(similar to neons) with Angels.

Any stem plants or plants on wood would be fine with Angels. I have a planted aquarium with around 40 fishes including an Angel. I buy plants from different shops depending on availability but mostly I prefer to buy from Aqua Art on Salwa road. Don't forget that plants need Co2,light and Fertilization to grow well.

For food you can buy Hikari or Sera, they are the Best.

Hope this helps.

Sefri, as for shops, I do know there are two on the same road as the Doha Clinic, opposite side of the road. There is also a new one on Salwa Rd, directly accross from Hardees at the 2nd RA, it's called Aqua Art. Never been in any of them so I cant tell you what they have. Good Luck.

Sefri, Angelfish and discus both require a "soft" water. that means the PH should be over 7 as 7 is neutral. 8.0 to 8.5 should be good. You can soften water by treating with PEAT during the filtration process. Some driftwood that has been thoroughly cleansed is also nice. Amazon swords are nice in this type of tank as well. I dont know if you will want to keep the angelfish and discus together, but you can keep neon tetras with both. Dont forget to do your cyclic water changes to keep the minerals from building up as water evaporates. let me know how it turns out. Good Luck.

not sure about the plants, but do check the directory and call them up ahead of time to ask

-id recommend you buy a heater, AC will be on in the summers, and esp with the tetras or any small fish in general, temp does matter. i dont think they'd make it through 24C for long

-not sure about the non-canned fish food as well.

note: if your going to use flakes, try a couple brands out 1st, some end up coloring the water in your tank

good luck!
