Hi! I was hanging out with a friend that's form the royal family yesterday and we saw someone that owned a baby cheetah! He said he has one as well. I think they are the cutest things in the world and I was wondering firs of all how much are they to buy, and where can I buy one?

Thank you so much~

I just happened to chance upon this so I joined up to pass comment.

You can buy captive bred Cheetahs from Europe and South Africa from £6,000.00 to £9,000.00. Should you decide to do this make sure it has the official paperwork to prove it is captive bred and has had a rabies jab and other essential vacinations. You are best to get a male at about 3 months old and bring it up in the house. If you have a dog they should play with each other (as long as the dog is friendly) and be friends for life. He will want to sleep with or near you which you must allow him to do as it will form a close bond. If left alone or neglected he will call continually. Any outside area needs to have a 3 meter fence or wall with an overhang. The best food food for them is venison or horse meat but they will eat chicken, beef or lamb. Only the decent cuts though no rubbish and no fat. Give them it with the bones as they will crush, eat and digest the small ones which is good for them.

They are best on a body harness (Husky race ones are excellent) and should be attached via a lead to a waist belt. Getting them to walk though is not so easy as all they want to do is lay down and play with their tail. On the other hand they will want to chase anything that moves, dogs, cats, bikes, kids and so on.

As they get older they will start to test you, a quiet but stern command and a tap on the nose should suffice, but be consistent so as to set the ground rules early and not confuse him.

They become well socialised and will not be too timid but they do have a tendancy jump if suprised as they are not a confrontational animal. As they get older they become bolder and will bite and use the big claw on the wrist on people they dont like, including kids. The bite is powerful enough to puncture a car tyre so be warned. A small fire exstinguisher sprayed from behind the head will get them to let go if they ever do bite but it best not to get in that situation in the first place! A male will also start to spray to mark his territory as he gets older which is non too pleasant indoors.

This is just a brief, unemotional but objective summary. They are the easiest of the big cats to manage and love to play and have a fuss made of them.

On the practical side, it will take over your life for 20 years, a serious commitment. You will have all manner of critism directed at you and you will find yourself having to justify what you are doing to others and eventually yourself. So if you do get one make sure that is sits right in your own mind.

Saying this trained wild trapped Cheetahs have been used for thousands of years for hunting and only 60 years ago were still being used to catch Blackbuck.

As for the comments from others about Cheetahs still being taken from the wild I would like to know more of this. The nearest wild ones are two small populations in Iran and Algeria.

I await developments!!!!!

One of these days, pedro, I swear-to-God you're gonna get your mom fired. In the US we tolerate a lot of hijinks because of our right to privacy and the freedom of speech we have. YOU DON'T HAVE THOSE HERE.

It is your fault for contributing to the demand in the illegal pet trade and in contravention of CITES treaty to which Qatar is a signatory.

Unless and until people educate themselves (do an internet search, it takes mere seconds) and try to stop this at least by not increasing demand then you deserve any and all penalties you incur.

This time my signature line applies.

I got the shock of my life when i saw a cheetah sitting on a garden wall in Gharafa about six years ago! True there was a six foot wire fence between him and me erected on top of the normal block wall but it didn't seem totally secure. I passed this house (was featured in local paper on more than one occasion) frequently and was amazed to find dogs sitting near him on the wall (one was a giant poodle!) Seemed perfectly happy.

I heard a story of a Qatari family bringing a tiger cub to the Vet, on being informed that this was an extremely dangerous animal to have as a pet they said it was alright, they only fed it on vegetarian food so there was no problem!

HAHAHAHAHAHA - dumbest quote of the year goes to...

Pedrolics : "If you get them while there babies your fine. Do some research."

Classic. And probably the thoughts of every person mauled by a wild animal they got as a baby. Doesn't matter what age you get them at - their wild instincts are always the same.

Pedrolics - you leave me stunned.

Please be aware that anyone owning a cheetah, asking about cheetahs for sale or offering them for sale are reported to the CITES division at the ministry of environment. The first illegal cheetah was confiscated last week (and yes it was owned by a Qatari) and I suggest you keep your stupid ideas to yourself in the future.

You think you would be able to take care of a cheetah in your house? Just laughable. Let me guess - you would teach it to use a cat litter box and walk on a lead too? And when it got sick you would have to leave it to die because the good vets here won't treat wild animals and the ones that do pretend to know what they're doing generally kill them with the wrong medications and treatments.

Just because you would "try" to look after your animal doesn't justify owning a critically endangered species. All you would do is encourage the trade in wild animals and make hundreds of other animals suffer cruel lives.

And you want a cheetah because it is "cute". Well that kinda sums it up.

Mandilulur, Oh also do you really think I would come home with a cheetah just be like "Sup mom? Like my new exotic animal?" If I we're to get one I would put deep thought and consideration into it. Like m decision to get gauges (which I still haven't gotten because I'm STILL considering the cons of it to make sure it's a good decision).

I think it is very rude and immature for you guys to be judging me on my views rather than politely answering my honest question. So I didn't know that that was illegal and i wouldn't be the one smuggling them into Qatar, and that's not my fault that they are being smuggled into Qatar. If I did ever buy one I think it would be better than some other person to buy a baby cheetah and smuggle it to more countries etc. If I did get one I wouldn't be smuggling it places I would be taking very good care of it in my house. What is wrong with you people? Please tone it down a notch and go protest somewhere else. If someone wants to give me a serious answer please feel free to message me. Thank you very much.

How ignorant can you be? My wish is that all these idiots that think it's cute and cool to keep a wild animal captive learn the lesson the hard way -- through their powerful jaws and sharp claws.

I agree 100% with the above comment. Also remember that they are NOT captive bred. The mother is shot and left do die while her cubs are ripped away from her. They are then smuggled into Egypt and given false papers. How can you live with yourself knowing that. It's one thing a member of the royal family having one, at the end of the day there are not too many of them to desimate the wild population and perhaps they can afford to buy captive bred ones. I do not want to critise them, it's their country but as a visitor to their country, you should live by their laws. You may well get into huge trouble with the authorities here, they do not appreciate people smuggling illegal pets into the country. They are not cute, they are wild animals.

It won't be so cute when it mauls you and scratches your friend's face off, which I hope it will do when it grows up. Cheetahs are critically endagered species, listed in the IUCN red list and regulated by the CITES convention on endangered species.

Your rich and powerful friend is illegally and unethically using his money to show off at the expense of a species and our global biodiversity. All very sad.

On no account buy one. I hope you can't find the crook who sold it to him (though i understand that lots of illegal endangered animals are available here as there are so many people with more money than sense, no compassion, and a huge thirst to show off).
