When someone adopts an animal from QAWS surely it's better they know what they're letting themselves in for?
We could lie to everyone that comes and say it's free to adopt, they're house-trained, it's really cheap to take them with you when you leave Qatar, they won't play bite or scratch your kids when they play, they'll stay really small and cute... But after 1 month all the dogs would be returned because they didn't know how hard it would be to have a very small puppy.
The neutering policy is non-negotiable and is found in every rescue shelter in the world. There are already too many dogs in this country and we get dozens of calls every year of where the dog has accidently got outside for a few hours and come back pregnant. When someone suddenly has 9 puppies, who's the first person they call? Normally QAWS.
We don't encourage people to buy puppies from the Souq as all it does is encourage the trade and will mean even more puppies will be sold there. That and the fact that most of them are sick.
frankly speaking chelsea, if i really need to do some good then i had rather rescue an animal from souq waqif rather than QAWS...coz at QAWS, they are fed and taken for walks... at souq waqif, they will live and they will die in tht cage...
well! chelsea...its not only the expense tht bothered me.. i wudnt want anyone to really tell me wht to do with my kids...i love them and i wud try to do the best for them... QAWS cant dictate the terms to me.. for me a pet is as good as my family...at QAWS, from the minute i walked in, i felt a negative attitude.. rather than encouraging adoption, the rep went on tellign me y it is so difficult to keep a pet... my husband was so totally put off... the attitude was simply too much... hav u ever wondered y dogs at QAWS stay there for 2-3 years... thts coz of the attitude they show wen people show up for adoption... and they dont realise the fact tht no matter how much they feed the animals there, end of the day they go back to a cage not a home... and frankly speaking i feel, if i really need to do a good deed i had rather rescue an animal from souq waqif coz they are the ones tht really need the food, family and healthcare.. no one buys them, they will die in their cage.. in QAWS atleast they are fed...
Garg - The adoption fee for a dog at QAWS is just to cover the cost of the neutering and would be maximum of QR1,500 for a large female.
If you are looking at buying a purebred from in Qatar you will pay a minimum of QR3,000 for a puppy and then on top you would have to pay for the vaccinations etc that are already included with a QAWS dog.
Mastiffs are banned breeds and there are no reputable dog breeders in Qatar. If you are looking for a good purebred then you need to import one from abroad which will cost you QR6,000+.
So it's not really very expensive to adopt from QAWS when you actually look at it.....
i have had a labrador before in india... yes training does come late but her training started at 2 months... we had a trainer for it... it was easier then when i didnt have any kids... i have 2 now and 4th one is due in march... as for mastiff, i have been around mastiff and they were huge but gentle... maybe u r right, it might be banned here... being new in qatar, i find everything so far off and difficult...
WAQS was the first place i did go... they mentioned abt a pet being a family memeber and all. but they do not let u take the decisions for the family member(pets from QAWS)... for example i am against neutering, they say its compulsory... and the cost involved in adopting a dog from QAWS is much much higher than buying a pure bred from a breeder... i am not against QAWS... but adopting from QAWS is for the extremely rich people...
Wouldn't advise Mastiff where children are involved, may well be a banned breed here too. Don't buy from souq PLEASE. Go to QAWS and give a loving home to a poor dog who will give you lots of love in return, they have all ages. Please think about it at least?
That's a bit of an oxymoron. Puppies aren't trained. The training of a dog begins at six months and goes until they are a year or so. So if you want a trained dog, it would have to be an adult. And labs and mastiffs are SO different in temperament, are you sure you know what you want?
