Al Janoub Stadium

Al Wakrah has been continually inhabited for centuries and has long been a hub for fishing and pearl diving. The design of Al Janoub Stadium was influenced by the conventional dhow boats employed in these activities. The 40,000-seat Al Janoub Stadium, which is in the southern city of Al Wakrah, debuted on May 16, 2019, in conjunction with the Amir Cup final. Beautiful landscape and the exquisite architecture of the arena will welcome football fans as they approach the stadium.

This fantastic location is accessible to everyone, not just tourists from abroad. Some of the additional facilities being built to go with Al Janoub Stadium include a school, wedding hall, cycling, horseback riding, and jogging tracks, restaurants, marketplaces, gyms, and parkland. The initiative, which would further bind their close-knit community, will provide residents with several long-term advantages.

Design

The maritime legacy of Al Wakrah is referenced in this futuristic arena, which is a stunning link between the ancient and the modern and a potent illustration of Qatar's desire to go beyond its borders. All who view the unique shape of Al Janoub Stadium immediately recognize it and won't soon forget it. Its ethereal shapes and flowing lines were influenced by the old dhow boats that navigated the Gulf's currents.

The vista from within the stadium, where bending beams support the roof, which resembles a ship's hull and lets light pour into the arena, is just as breathtaking. But excessive heat doesn't necessarily follow from too much light. Along with a cutting-edge cooling system, clever design contributes to the comfort of spectators, athletes, and officials. The arena's design was influenced by a thorough micro-climate research, with aerodynamics and ideal shade from the roof—which has very little glass—making a substantial contribution to temperature regulation.

These ideas were influenced by AECOM, who worked with Zaha Hadid Architects to construct Al Janoub Stadium. The project's design consultant was AECOM, while the project manager was KEO International Consultants. The project was completed by a group of domestic and foreign contractors.

Sustainability

The stadium's whole form conceals a wonderfully eco-friendly temperature management system, leaving much of the work to the facility's brilliant aerodynamic design. Significant shade is provided by the roof, which relieves pressure on the sophisticated cooling systems.

The innovative thinking utilized to save the environment would make the resourceful marine traders who formerly called Al Wakrah home happy. As the nation works diligently to meet the environmental objectives outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030, modern-day Qatar may also be proud.

The stadium was awarded a Class A* sustainability grade by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) in November 2018, recognizing the project's strong environmental protection initiatives.

Around the Al Janoub Stadium complex, extensive green areas are being constructed. These beautiful parks will provide room for horseback riding, jogging trails, and cycling lanes in addition to more than 800 new trees and low-water-use plants.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy and its stakeholders have given careful consideration to how spectators traveling to Al Janoub Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2022TM matches would affect the environment. Roads are being improved to shorten commutes and lower pollutants. Bus capacity is also being expanded.

Legacy

The ancient port of Al Wakrah has always had its eyes on the future and the boundless ocean. Its new stadium is no different, leaving a lasting impression that will extend well beyond the Gulf.

Al Janoub Stadium will become a new location for sporting events and entertainment in southern Qatar following the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. Its capacity will be lowered to 20,000, ensuring an electrifying environment. The remaining 20,000 seats will be given to international football development initiatives, showcasing Al Wakrah's creative spirit and capacity to reach out to distant places once more.

Plans of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy go beyond the football stadium. Cycling and jogging tracks, as well as a multifunctional indoor arena, are among the additional athletic facilities being built in the area surrounding the stadium. A new school will challenge people's minds, while new pedestrian-friendly outdoor areas will urge them to stay in shape.

The construction of a mosque, wedding hall, and market will further bind the little town. The corniche, harbor, and souq will all get renovations, which will help local commerce and tourists.

Al Janoub Stadium continues to provide an important contribution to the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 through the use of green technologies. The initiative has already improved community amenities, athletic venues, and commercial and tourism prospects. Additionally, it is promoting the growth of the economy, society, humankind, and the environment—all pillars of the QNV 2030 strategy to create a brighter future for Qatar.
