BBC highlights plight of workers in Qatar

The world cup is starting to draw ever increasing attention to the plight of migrant workers in Qatar. Below is a link to today's special report on the subject by the BBC.

From the report

"Tales of woe from workers in Qatar"

Qatar has one of the most restrictive labour systems in the Gulf, according to a recent report by Human Rights Watch.

The organisation said migrant workers commonly face exploitation, the threat of unpaid wages, withholding of passports and unsafe working conditions.

I think it will be interesting to see if the increased attention on Qatar's sponsorship system as a result of the WC will ultimately promote needed reform.

It is not so much as being involved in rackets but the dependency on foreign exchange to boost their economies.

I wouldn't say that it is entirely their fault, but they share in the blame.

It is the fault of the countries who permit their citizens to immigrate to places where labor laws are almost nonexistent. Are these embassies & their envoys sleeping here in Qatar. Why don't they take some stand on worker's complaints? Reason being that the corrupt governments of these so called poor countries themselves are involved in these kind of rackets.

Muneer did the sponsor ask for that money or did the middlemen from your own country took the money from them?

I met couple of pour labors which paid @ QAR 10,000 - 15,000 to work in Qatar with an RP. They are now suffering with the sponsor, which said execuse that he has no jobs so they found themselves unemployed. The Imam of Friday prayer advised them to go to human rights authority, and court.

A lot can be done by Company Tax...

To evade the tax companies can be encouraged spend more on labour welfare, better staying facilities, better canteen facility, sporting facilities etc. And these must be inspected by an independent 3rd party.

This would take care of a lot of issues.

I wonder how much of this clinging to outdated labour laws is a symptom of how far the country has to go to developing into a first-world dociety? When the laws of the land are effectively applied only to the group of people who'se residence-status you control absolutely it is very hard to contemplate giving up that control. It would mean that the entire approach to law enforcement and the concept of egalitarianism would have to be reconsidered.

I don't think this is critical, it is a fact, our hosts here have a difficult balancing act as they negotiate the waters toward a fair and just society and I don't think it is possible to do it in a few decades. Many of our home countries have been working at it for centuries and still don't have it right.

Give a chance to these reporters from BBC to join Al Jazeera in Doha with two year ban policy they will still leave BBC and everything for the Green pastures in doha.

How come none of these reporters were concerned about the other GCC countries. Their sponsorship system and ban changed very recently.

Is this the reason for the proposed "Contract" system rather than the existing "Sponsorship" system or is it just another whitewash ?

Hmm

Riaz this has nothing to do with the west being jealous....

If you still believe that Qatar "Won" the right to hold the World Cup after all of the corruption in Fifa has been exposed well..

But back to the point, the reason the western media is only now interested is simple. Nobody was really interested in Qatar before, now it is hosting the second biggest sporting event in the world of course the spotlight is going to be turned on Qatar. I remember when it was announced that Qatar was going to host the world cup, alot of news stations even had a special segment to explain where it was!

Personally I'm not sure if it will change anything.. But one thing is for sure Qatar doesn't like to look bad in public especially in the global media. So maybe something might happen?

Yep, we all know what is happening but nothing is being done about it. This is something for the locals to fix. The foreign companies are here just to make money with local joint venture companies. After the project is completed theyses companies and their Western expats will just leave. Locals have to fix their own problems in the long run; too often they have difficulties to accept criticism and react by turning it into racist, colonialism, etc...

This ever increasing world attention to the flight of foreign workers has got nothing to do with the jealousy of sort by the West. This is the truth and you can't hide it.

I hope so.. However the campaigns highlighting the positives are very well funded and may drown out the nay Sayers..

One other thing to keep in mind is that Qatar seems to be going with major Western companies for the infrastructure projects .. So will this help in hiding the issues ?

Bachus.. these issues are from the day when u or me were not even born not from today... but dont know why west start highlighting it today and start worrying about workers now.. do they just woke up or they just discover Qatar after bid 2022..

i think workers should say thanx to FIFA coz of them west woke up....

Qatar need sometime to solve these issues and need to make some new rules which is not an easy task.. west plzz give them sometime...

I always like the 'honesty' demonstrated by the Labor Ministry...No time to comment on such trivial matters ;)

Riaz--So the West is jealous of the abuse of workers Qatar???

I don't know Brit. Qatar's leadership seems rather sensitive to world opinion. Otherwise why spend so much on advertising the value of QF in Western media, work so hard to host international events, etc. It may take time, but ultimately if increased media attention that goes hand-in-hand with the world cup continues to highlight the workers who build the stadiums, then maybe there will be some changes for the good.

this shows reality about qatar and jealousy of west who are still in condition of shock and still not believing that Qatar won the bid....

I doubt much will happen. People are still desperate to come here ,whilst employers are still focused on maximising profits..
