10 things to do in Qatar to get a feel of local culture
If you're new to Qatar, here's a list of some spots we’ve come across, from my own experience, as great places to get a feel of Qatar's local culture.
Souq Waqif is the best place to go to get a real ancient feel of Qatar. The souq was founded at least a century ago in proximity of the dry riverbed known as Wadi Musheireb. It was a gathering place where Bedouins and locals would trade in different goods. The government then proceeded to restore it while retaining its architecture and historical identity. The Souq is now buzzing with restaurants, exhibitions, shopping for garments, spices, perfumes and much more. A falcon souq and an animal souq also exist within the premises.
Karak
Karak is possibly the first thing people will tell you to try when you land in Qatar. Although it is not really Qatari, its still very symbolic of the daily routines of a large number of locals and expats alike.
Desert Safari
Take a tour through the beautiful sand dunes of Qatar in a land cruiser, swim in the inland sea, and spend the evening camping there. This is one of the most popular things to do in Qatar and Inland Sea (Khor Al Udeid) is where you can see the sea surging west in a narrow channel that separates Qatar from Saudi Arabia and then curves off to the North to create a shallow lake.
Zubarah
Zubarah Fort has a rich heritage and is definitely a must visit place to know more about Qatar’s culture and history. This is a historic Qatari military fortress located 105 kms away from Doha, on the Northwestern coast. It is situated in the town of Zubarah, which is the only UNESCO world heritage site located in Qatar.
Katara
Another cultural hub in Qatar, located ahead of the famous West Bay. Katara has its own corniche, amphitheatre, shopping areas, restaurants, art galleries and so much more. Grab the famed karak, and stroll around the cultural streets of Katara.
Museum of Islamic Art
The museum is located right next to the MIA park, which is a popular hangout for residents. The museum represents the full scope of Islamic art across three continents over 1400 years.
Qatari food
Qatari cuisine combines traditional Arab cuisine with Indian and Iranian influences. Machboos is the national dish in Qatar. You can find Qatari cuisine at the Souq, or any Qatari restaurant around town.
Hijama
The Chinese have been doing it for centuries, and it is a well-known practice in the Islamic world, and in Qatar too. Hijama is derived from the Arabic word Al Hajm which means suction. You can find several Hijama clinics around Qatar. This is laden with health benefits.
Dhow ride
Dhows are important elements from Qatari history and they are located all around the Corniche. Prices vary depending on whether you take a short ride off the Corniche, book one for a private party, or take a sunset dhow cruise with dinner.
Majlis
The Majlis is the most common cultural aspect locally. Most Qataris usually gather in their majlis’ over coffees and conversation. There are several ones located in and around souq waqif.
Dear Shereendsouza,
