1,600 Saudi divorces over 'bedroom issues'

Interesting .. Any thoughts ?

The Justice ministry statistics showed courts in the conservative Gulf Kingdom recorded 1,371 divorce cases filed by wives because of their husbands’ reluctance to sleep with them.

The courts also finalised 283 divorces sought by husbands who accused their wives of refusing to have intercourse with them.

Officials said the actual number of divorces caused by such cases is actually much higher on the grounds many couples refuse to divulge private sex-related issues.

“The problems involving lack of intercourse between couples in Saudi Arabia are a result of social and psychological factors or organic illnesses.

“They could also be caused by the fact that either spouse does not like or love the other.

There could also be hatred between the couples,” said Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Sadhan, an Islamic studies professor at the college of technology in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

“These are very sensitive cases so the number of cases provided by courts does not reflect the real size of the problem.

Saudi Arabia, with a population of around 30 million, has one of the highest divorce rates in the world. Other Gulf oil producers are suffering from a similar problem, which officials have blamed on mixed marriages and other factors.

A Saudi social expert, quoted recently by the Saudi Al Arabiya news network, described the high divorce rate in the world’s oil superpower as an “alarming indicator”.

And now you know why so many women aren't working Paj - their husbands don't give them permission to work. (Or leave the house, or go to the mall or have spending money.)

Paj: Wrong..

Women do have accounts and can transact without control

Women can and do go shopping etc without their guardians

By Paj• 20 Jan 2014 11:51
Paj

but the majority of women (90%) in Saudi are not working? In Saudi, husband will be the one to control the money since women are not allowed to transact or open an account in Banks without the their guardians(husband) approval, women could not go to any malls, groceries or salons without their guardian accompanying them...

According to an article in the Saudi Gazette:

"Forty percent of divorces were mainly due to the husband’s refusal to let his wife continue to work and forcing her to quit her job, while 60 percent were due to issues related to the husband’s control of his wife’s salary. "

I believe the simple fact is that young couples have too many expectations regarding marriage.

Anyway, back to the topic.

I was intrigued by the following “Saudi authorities, alarmed by the high rate of divorce, have been pushing for a better approach by young couples to the concept of marriage with proper training and advice for matrimonial lives. Several religious scholars have also been calling for imposing mandatory training courses before marriage.”

Is there a need for training courses ? What purpose would it serve ?

It must be hard, keeping 4 wives happy. That's extra pressure on all us expats to work extra hard so that these men can spend 4 times as much quality time at home.

ROFL at some comments just above mine. Someone, going by the absurd thought process displayed continuously, needs to see concerned medical practitioner on ASAP basis.

Yes, how right you are. Even if it means that we spend less time with our families, it will be a worthwhile sacrifice because it means that our sponsors can spend more time together.

Galinda: MM may have a point . We expats need to more diligent in our work and must ensure that the locals get to spend quality tone with their spouses,

This should be our new year resolution

Are you honestly suggesting that the reason Saudi has one of the world's highest divorce rates is because ex-pats don't work hard enough?

What about in countries where men and women work 12 hours a day each and have to run a house with no maids while raising their children themselves? Shouldn't the divorce rate be even higher because husband and wife are working so much harder, according to your 'logic'?

Real Factor , Expats might not be taking proper interest & responsibility in looking after the nationals' businesses even after pocketing so much money ... .... so the young men had to think & work late at their offices & meet associates which is leaving them less time for their wives ..... hence all that news stuff ......

Let us Expats ... from today .... do our work sincerely & be honest with our employers and save them from those type of circumstances which are effecting their personal life ...

Arranged or rather enforced marriages must have a bearing, but there must be other factors which lead to such high rates.
