228 deaths.... What! How many did we see reported?

And 185,000 road accidents in total for one year... in a one city country?

Media focus on fatal road accidents
The problem of fatal road accidents in Qatar has been the focus of reporting in the local Arabic press for the third consecutive day, with the main story being that of the accident that claimed the lives of three Qatari women near Zubara off the Shemal expressway last Friday.
The daily Arrayah, in a three-page survey, presented various aspects of the problem.
It has highlighted the findings of a group of students of statistics at the Qatar University.
They predicted that the number of road accidents by the year 2015 can be as high as 299,000 and the number of deaths, 336.
They worked out these figures on the basis of the present rate of accidents. Last year there were 185,000 road accidents with 228 deaths.

Speeding car kills school student in Bin Omran areaAn Egyptian higher secondary school student was killed by a speeding car when he was crossing the Ahmed bin Ali Street near his school in Bin Omran area on Monday, says a report in the local daily Arrayah. The deceased was going with a group of his classmates to attend special coaching classes in the school at 5pm when he met his fatal end. The principal of the school said in a statement to the daily that traffic on the Ahmed bin Ali Street is always heavy and students are constantly advised to use the underground pedestrian crossing and avoid the main road. “But the unhygienic condition of the underground crossing puts them off,” he said. The municipal authorities had been repeatedly informed and requested to clean it up but no action has been taken so far. As many as 1,000 students studying in two schools in the area take the risk of crossing the road in spite of heavy vehicular traffic. “We also requested the Supreme Council for Education to advise the Public Works Authority to put up iron railings on both sides of the street as has been done on Grand Hamad Street in order to prevent people from crossing the road,” said the principal.

These are shocking figures. A safety awareness campaign would be a worthwhile exercise.

For god's sake strap your kids in with secure car seats, I'm sick of seeing kids jumping round cars unsecured, this is a mental driving city, your kids are of paramount importance...STRAP THEM IN!!!!!....not just yourselves.

The solution is simple. Take away the licenses of women and Expats... :o)

If pedestrians would stop throwing themselves in front of the slow-moving, safety-conscious Land Cruisers, the number of deaths would go way down.

Gtrman that's very true, most blame on locals or asians but I've seen quite a few westerners doing crazy things.

..its tht sence of entitlement and complete disregard to rules..... i know some who simply flaunt the rules becuz its deemed to be subserviant and basically a cowardice if u wear ur seat belt or drive at the given max speed ... ...and if for some freak of nature they do get stopped... nose kisses and distant cousin relations all of a sudden crop up....

yes the roads play to some extent but i stress, its mostly the driver....

apparently even the non-locals have went on this tide of ...hey if hes doing...why the hell wont i?

People will drive better if the rules are enforced. Just look at Dubai. Same population, but their traffic laws are enforced.

We should also consider that accidents with casualties theoretically generate around QAR 22.8 million in "blood-money". It seems to be an interesting economic factor.

have you ever saw a car being stopped for a traffic violation, like speeding, which kills? Or have you ever seen a traffic police doing his work to implement the rules: like, using the fone while driving (it kills too), etc...etc...? And just look at the quality of the roads here. Are these designed for the big LC's and other SUVs prowling the streets? No amount of posters, or the media, or whatever, unless an honest to goodness policing happens, RTAs will keep on rising. Until then, driving here would be like playing russian roulette.

I just don't understand when simple precautions can save lives, like strapping your children in. I mentioned this at work and how I would not go anywhere without strapping my son in, a collegue said she could not make her 4 year old son strap himself in and that is why she did not do it. I would have said, no strapping in, we don't go anywhere but alas she did not agree

Since its driving and traffic, i've heard that kids cannot be put on the front seat. up to what age or kids of what age can sit in the front seat of the car

plain arrogance. especially with the blackberry sets will almost all locals and slow dirvers in the fast lane

This is the crux of the problem, whilst certain sections of the population know they can get out of pretty much every traffic violation then bad driving will continue

By flor1212• 18 Jan 2012 10:44

it is the authorities' fault and not the driver's? Lol!

It is road policing at a distance. How many people do you actually see being pulled over for traffic violations? Despite the fact that there always seem to be a ton of road traffic cops about. Every day i see children not strapped in, or people talking on their mobile phones or tail gating or cutting you up, so if I can see it, why can't the police?

By flor1212• 18 Jan 2012 10:23

implemented. Except for the use of CELLPHONE while driving. I really hate those people and I think this is also the major causes of modern day traffic accidents. PLAIN ARROGANCE!

implementation of rules..

Rules are there but none are implemented strictly. Traffic Patrol should be increased and fine on the spot.

Even a simple campaign for seat belts would help....and car seats for kids!!! Slap a 6000QR fine on anyone caught flaunting the rules and you'd see the change VERY quickly. How many people do you see jumping red lights since they introduced the 6000QR fine??? One Policeman at busy sets of traffic lights writing tickets....job done.

really happened to that accident in Zubara road where 3 (or 4) local ladies died. Was it due to the road condition, human error or what?

I understand the anxiety because we are all here, but Qatar is 52nd, so what do we expect with the first 51?

By jjj75• 18 Jan 2012 09:57

I question how some people managed to get a driving license???

By anonymous• 18 Jan 2012 09:56

No, screw that safety campaign, they need to put some of these idiots in jail.

This morning an official bus driver challenged me in front of my daughter to get out of the car. We were at an intersection taking the main road and this bus was at least 100mts away from the intersection, the second I started taking the main road he accelerated and started honking and flashing repeatedly with his headlights.

Every day is an adventure in the roads of Doha. I can witness how most parents at school would ignore the safety measures within the premises.

What does that tell you? We have potential criminals on wheels.

Lock'em up! Word will spread out and people will think twice before doing stupid things.

There were 1,905 road traffic accident deaths in the UK in 2010, working out at 31 deaths per 1million of the population....(approx 60mil pop in total)

So 'theoretically' that equates to 152 deaths per 1mil in Qatar (based on 1.5m total)...WOW.

less than the number of ppl that die due to stabs in the UK
