I keep getting phone calls from either of these numbers in the middle of the night for the past couple of weeks.

It only rings once or twice, so I think it is a scam. Anyone else getting them, or actually called back?

[moderator note: title of thread modified so people don't accidently skype the numbers!!!]

They charge QTel who then charge you!

That's how premium rate numbers work - they pay to set up the number and then get commision from the telephone companies whenever someone calls it. However, when it's done internationally I don't know the ins-and-outs of which telco (qtel or the one in guinae-bissau) pays what amount of commision.

I've had the number call on both my phones.

Don't call it back - you will get charged and they will get a commission.  This stuff is really common.

There was a similiar one like this done from Russia.  When you returned the call you were charged a fortune and the person you were calling was making a huge amount from you.

If you don't know the number, or the country code, don't ever return these sorts of missed calls.

"Make a difference or make way"

There are various scams. Like one guy tried to sell me shares. He spoke American English and he was tellin me stuff which were so convincing. He called me for 4 days continuously and finally I got so pissed of that I said ...... Try someone else dude. If you fall prey to it.....next thing is you would transfer them money and u get nothing. Forget phone calls. Once an adv came in Dubai paper. Recruitment for offshore oil rigs in Canada. We have to apply for it and the charges were 150 US$. I filled it out and send it. It was in Khaleej times.....most reputed newspaper. But it was a scam.

Anyone with any sense will understand not to get involved with such things, there have been quite a few cases worldwide with British girls getting involved with drugs justtaking packages to help someone.

I have received phone calls from GB in the same manner to and don't have any family or friends there I am sure it is all scam one has  to be careful.

They get money from the premium rate charges you pay when you call the number back.

GM - what are they getting out of this. If you call back Q-Tel will charge you and they don't pay a commision to this idiot :(

"Make a difference or make way"

There was something that happened a month back. 2 brit girls got contacted like this. They were 16 years old i guess. Flew down to some african country since they were told they would get 1 million pound if they smuggled out drugs from there. They flew down and got caught in the act.

So what they gain out of this scam

By globalmerchant• 11 Mar 2008 10:13

"Make a difference or make way" Any calls like that are thru internet. And there are millions of ways to get mobile numbers. It can even be just random dialing. Ones someone picks up they save that number. Just ignore it. I once got a call from US saying he has microsoft shares to sell. Heights of nonsense.

By tallg• 11 Mar 2008 10:11

Apparently it is a scam. Don't call them back. There was a thread on QL about it a few days back.

The call is coming from Guinea-Bissau (+245). If you call back you're charged at premium rates.
