25-year-old foreigner gang-raped in India

A 25-year-old foreign woman has allegedly been raped by two men in the popular northern Indian Himalayan resort town of Manali, senior local police officers said on Monday.

The woman has told police she was attacked early Sunday morning after flagging down what she thought was a taxi and asking for a lift to a nearby town, superintendent Padam Chand said.

"There were six people in the car and two of the occupants raped her she alleged," Chand told AFP, and then they fled.

The woman had been trying to reunite with friends who had already left for the nearby town of Keylong after they all arrived in Manali a few days earlier.

Police were examining CCTV footage from cameras installed on the streets on Manali, popular with holidaying foreigners and Indians, in the hope of identifying the suspects.

"She is being shifted today to a bigger hospital in Mandi town to carry out a proper medical examination," Gandhi Ram, another police officer in Manali, said by phone.

India hiked punishments for rapists as part of an overhaul of sexual assault laws in the wake of a fatal gang-rape in 2012 that shone a global spotlight on frightening levels of violence against women in India.

But rape and sexual assault remain commonplace, with incidents hitting the headlines on an almost daily basis.

Are draconian punishments the only answer to stop these heinous crimes ?

Equinox: I think you need to go back and read the thread.. One person twisted the topic by saying the story was old, when it had just been published .. then went off at a tangent..

The whole point is to have a meaningful discussion - not make points with inane comments.

MM, QL bloggers have the right to write what ever they want, provided the blogs are within the stipulated QL rules. And if there is no objection by the moderator, then let all the bloggers write and discuss the subjects of their interest, there is no harm in it, and there should be no offense to it.

On the other hand, brit and Ab both have been today hard on MM, while they wanted to discuss this burning issue. MM is for sure, a positive thinker and he hardly makes lot of noise because he is always " Short and Sweet".

AB, Brite, MM, Mufit, & WT you are five stars of Qatar Living. Let the QL community enjoy your lively thoughts and rich experiences, but while you do so, you all need to make a deliberate effort to remain in the positive mood, all along.

There are hardly a few bloggers on QL and they too, if continue waging war of words between them, and do not indulge in intelligent discussion, then QL community shall be the sufferer, for sure.

Therefore let us have "Intelligent reasoning" on all the posts, whatsoever, without offending or snubbing each other.

If we cannot make friends here, then we do not have either the right to make enemies as well, let us agree on it.

Mufti: I just wish and pray something like this does not happen to any female in this world let alone to someone in MM's family. I would just love to see MM and his partner muad-db stop posting their stupid philosophies line after line, days after days, months after months. Am I asking for the moon? Possibly, I am.

Back to the topic ... Rape is abhorant and occurs in many countries.. The issue here is the various gang rapes..

Are they due to "opportunity" or intoxication ?

By britexpat• 26 Jul 2016 10:22

You were not discussing .. Your comments were "Brit, You are right, incident happened MORE THAN THREE days earlier .......... and you want to discuss it today ? ............." and "In today's fast three days are too long period of time , Brit ............."

Those comments do not consitute a discussion

MM: Your thinking is weird. I wish this would happen to someone in your family. That would take care of all the ridiculous "philosophies" your preach at QL when you feel the pain. Just what you do mean by "Caution, Safety, Personal Safety and Circumstances...?" Rather than condemning such a horrid act and putting across views on combating this growing menace in India, you go about posting rubbish in your usual manner. Rubbish just does not flow out from you. It pours out -- and you have no control on it.

Our attitude towards women is pathetic. I have been to Manali and a nearby town 'Kasol' which is called Amsterdam of India. One can see hundreds of foreigners at any given point of time there. These kind of incidents will surely harm India's tourism sector.

MM: i'm not going to argue wit your idiotic comments .. The news was posted today and testerday ..

If you want to discuss the topic fine.. Otherwise leave it be ..
