Abaya clad lady in an elevator

Guys, I have a question. Since I have arrived in Qatar, I have noticed that men do not take the elevator in which an abaya clad lady or ladies are present or are waiting for. Is it a local state norm or a matter of courtesy shown towards the ladies?

I find it strange as I have never seen it anywhere else.

women wont be disrespected if you join them in lift.

I sense it to be a form of sexism.

it may seem like common courtesy to all women, no matter what they're wearing, but the message that comes across to me, is that it's implied all men are voyeuristic rapists in confined quarters and cannot be trusted in any way.

but that's just my opinion. I still think it's a nice thing to do, and I do abide by it, anyway.

that when you see a lady in the elevator to let her go alone.

Get in the lift and go up or down. Going to jail for breaking wind in an elevator how ridiculous. People are commiting atrocities all over the world and getting away with it. flatulence is not worth a jail term lets be educated about this.

I have not noticed this happening with ladies from asian or western countries. Only when the lady is wearing an abaya, people tend to hesitate taking the lift along with her.

Does this mean men here respect the abaya instead of the person? Or are they afraid of the local ladies that a single complaint from them would land any expatriate behind bars and finally get deported?

With disregard what they wear and where they are from.

And one goes to jail if one farts in an elevator????

Why is this courtesy only given to a lady if she wears an abaya?

Do non abaya wearing women deserve less courtesy?

Apparently....

you dont really have to avoid local ladies in the elevator as long as you are respectful person which makes the lady feel comfortable. otherwise you will be in jail if you offended her. P.S. being respectful not only with local ladies but all nationalities. I dont see your example make any sense. the worker from the Asian country which you have mentioned has offended her so yeah he deserve to be in jail don't you think so?

And also it shows our respect to the woman

Personally I'd go in the lift with a man only if I am accompanied by either another lady, or another man even, but not when it's just me and an unknown guy.

In Dubai a worker from an asian country got a month's jail term for allegedly offending a local lady in an elevator. The poor man probably had a tummy bug who discomforted the lady by breaking wind.

I guess, its better to avoid being in a lift with a local lady..:) You never know in what ways you could offend her.

You might have seen the cases where elevator is already over-loaded, otherwise there isn't any thing like you mentioned. Feel free to step in, if elevator isn't full.

GodFather.

It's a courtesy towards women here.
