Acceptable Clothing
By Stacey London •
Hello Folks,
Can you please advise on the suitability of wearing certain types of clothing in Qatar:
- High heels
- Open-toed shoes (sandals, flip flops, etc.)
- Capri pants (between knee and ankle)
- Knee-length skirts
Any insight you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Stacey
I normally freeze indoors during summer months here …
Would I be able to wear items like the following?

And something like this, but not in thin jersey, in a thicker, satin-like material?

Thank you for your advice, it's really helpful, and very much appreciated.
A regular crew neck t-shirt just looks awful on me. Now I know I won't be able to wear the camisole tops on their own, but I was wondering would I get away with them for work so long as I wear a jacket or shirt over the top?
I've been wondering about the aircon situation over there. I know it gets stupidly hot during the summer, but when you're indoors where there's aircon, is everyone wearing jackets? Does the aircon make it really cool indoors? Or do people just wear t-shirts indoors?
If I wore a camisole top (to avoid the crew neck line, which does nothing for me), with a jacket on top, would I be absolutely sweltering indoors during the summer? Or would I be comfortable, taking the aircon into account?
those are all acceptable. As far as the tank tops, I myself wouldn't feel comfortable - I'd wear a jacket or a short sleeved shirt.
If you don't mind being constantly stared at, then it's fine....but you WILL be constantly starred at...by everyone - that's just the way it is here.
this is what I consider a tank top:

the spaghetti strap top is normally known as a camisole, though nowadays it is also called a tank top:

A nice medium is to wear the cap sleeve tops:

as for the skirts, I've taken to wearing those breezy indian skirts that come to about the calves - light and great for the hot months.
I would say all of these are a "no" for day-to-day wear. You could wear it but you will probably feel uncomfortable.

I would say something like this, just sleeveless, would be OK.

I wouldn't wear either option during Ramadan.
Best wishes
When you all say "tank top", what do you mean?
In the UK, a tank top is like a sleeveless knitted jumper/sweater and I'm sure you don't mean that.
Do you mean those little tops with spaghetti straps?
Do you mean what we call a vest top, but others might describe as a singlet-style top?
Do you just mean sleeveless?
If you link to some pictures of what you mean, that would be a great help.
Haa
Thats acceptable clothing amongst western community....
you must be understand what to wear..its simple just not too much and not too open here..or you'll end up with fight :{ cause people judge u!
hey u can still wear short skirt and tank top if you go to hotel beach :}
its all cool,
just make sure your g's are not peeping out to the public and they cant make out the bra make. LOL...else you are fine.
even if people do see it, no one will say anything to you except stare perhaps...the locals might give you the dissapproving look. people are quite tolerant and open to change.its takes time to be free.
happy heart
drive safe because someone is waiting for you at home
you can wear normal clothes like in your country only no bikini in public places. but if you wear some revealing clothes or too much skin showing you will get stare at.
of keep your shoulders covered and your knees covered other than that all cool!!!!
Jeez if the locals couldn't wear high heels and open toed shoes there would be chaos in the streets!
All of that is acceptable. Going down to the souqs you may want to cover up more but otherwise, no problems.
in my hmuble opinion, it depends on the place you go, but what you descripe is acceptable and frequently seen here among the westerners
yes, yes, yes and yes
