this data is probably based on the recorded taxes or duties the governments are collecting based on the liquor sales in their countries. this is not giving the right figures.

in many developing countries, rural class depends on country made liquor which are sold locally and don't get recorded in the goverment books. thats the reason sounth asian countries including india are coloured light on the scale.

i dont think drinks like arrack or toddy go through the state record.

Greenland has 56.000 inhabitants and all of them drink. It's the only way to survive there.

Just picture it...

A group of explorers land on virgin territory and ask themselves - "what shall we call this place we just found" ?

"Oh we know. Why not call it New-found-Land"

Now what does that say for their offspring ?

It appears that the developed countries have mid to high levels of alcohol consumption; from this we can conclude that if you want the following:

-high income per capita

-high human development index (HDI)

-high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita

-more energy consumption

-produce and trade more consumer goods

-higher literacy rate

-longer life expectancy

-lower infant mortality rate

-wide and varied infrastructure

-organized government

-manufacturing and technological inovation

-a free press and aa informed public

-universal, and in most cases, free healthcare

-gives overseas aid

then you need to drink more! :P

Compare the map above with this one if you don't believe me:
