American School of Doha's Jazz Concert

Last Wednesday on the 12, I bought a jazz ticket for a change. Notfromhere, my QL’er friend, gave me a tip off that ASD has a jazz concert, and her son played on the ASD Jazz band. I thought why not? I have never actually been to the proper jazz concert. This would make a change from watching classical recitals.

The concert featured The American School of Doha Jazz Band , ASD Chamber Singers and the visiting Jazz Artists from Virginia Commonwealth University.

The time on the ticket show start at 7pm, but there was slightly delay because the guest artists stuck in the traffic. As an opening ASD Jazz Band played few songs … my favourite was Liza Jane. They continued with the performance of ASD Chamber Singers … , they sang 2 songs : ‘till There Was You from Meredith Willson (arr.Kirby Shaw), and Blue Skies from Irving Berlin (arr. R. Emerson).

Save the best for last … The VCU Jazz Quientet is the main show for the night … the group consist Jonathan Gibson, Karl Morse, David Ashby, Dean Christensen and Antonio Garcia. They make selections from the program sheets … some of the songs they played that I can remembered were 9am  composed by John Gibson, and my favourite was Samba ‘Legria by Antonio Garcia.

The show lasted for an hour … I told myself, if there is another similar event, then I will certainly make the time and effort to attend.

Good post Novi, and nice to see band members reading this too.

Tara - don't be scared about setting up a QL group! You don't have to have lots of friends to do it - indeed, it's actually a good way to meet friends. It would just involve posting information about upcoming events and seeing who's interested in going. Then you could arrange to meet up before and after the event.

Novi, what do you mean "if"?

If I'm staying, you're staying, girl :-P

rvajazz, I very much enjoyed your performance as well. And it was a really good opportunity for our kids in the ASD jazz band. In fact, it was a topic of conversation at our Thanksgiving dinner table. Our son was telling our guests what a good experience it was :-)

Hope to see you back in Doha soon!

Thanks so much for posting this! We hadn't seen or heard any recordings from our performance at ASD so it's great to see them here. We really enjoyed that night at ASD. The audience was extremely supportive and their great attitude was infectious and really fueled our performance. And the hospitality that the school's bands and faculty showed us was very generous and accommodating.

I personally had a great week in your country and in the city of Doha. I can really see myself returning to Doha someday and look forward to witnessing the growth of a budding city!

Again, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the event.

Oh novita you are such a kind and gentle spirit.

I wouldn't dream of starting a group myself. Just so new here in Qatar. Better leave that to someone such as yourself who has so many friends. Sounds like you have a real passion and are a natural born leader.

I will definately sign up though. So count me as your first member.

Notfromhere : You are most welcome :) I dont think I video'ed your son clearly ... he is hiding behind his friend.

Tara : If you are interested to make a group, you can contact the website owner then they will sort it out for you. You will be the group manager, and people who interested to watch these type of shows can subscribe to your group. If you click 'Qatar Groups' on the top of this page, there are already several groups formed on this website.

Hey we should get a little group together to attend some of these things. That way when the other half is busy we won't be completely alone. And it will be a nice outing.

now for the ASD drama production of

WEST SIDE STORY Go to the school to purchase tickets. It will be performed Nov 31, Dec 1 and 2 I believe. Funny fact: The last sax player shown is Rex Wilkins who is to be Tony in West Side Story. Amazingly talented kid (whose father recently posted in QL that he needed a calculus tutor!)

It would be on the 27, 28, 29. Thursday, Friday, Saturday. On Friday and Saturday they have afternoon show. Go and check on QL calendar, i am sure i have posted the details over there.

You can get the ticket in Landmark Mall in Sharq CD shop (opposite body shop).

Next year february the coming production would be Grease.
