Animal Kingdom/Hell Pet Store

Hi,

I was looking for a new dog bed last night for my puppy and came across animal kingdom/Hell.

I went in with my husband and came out crying. There were tortoises in empty/small fish tanks, kittens in cages - looked like they had eye infections, fully grown cats in tiny cages and worst of all a sandy coloured puppy who was 5 months old - chained to a cage door, the poor thing looked sick and was lying on the floor.

I asked the shop assistant how long the puppy had been in the shop and he told me that he'd brought it in 4 days ago. I asked if it was taken for walks and he said yes but i don't agree. Its fur was matted and it really smelt bad.....poor thing. It loved the attention when i was with it. The guy said he would sell the puppy (a mixed breed of some sort) to me for QR 2500. I have a puppy at home so don't have space for another but it made me cry to see how terribly animals are treated in Aminal Kingdom and i didn't want to leave the poor puppy in their.....

I'll never go to animal kingdom again or  buy anything from them and urge pet owners to stay clear.....

Jesus.. why can't these assholes be closed down?

Please please please don't go to petshops.. there are unwanted dogs turning up in Dukhan every week..what about putting an Animals needing Homes group up on here so people know where to go straight away to look for pets?

(Apologies if it's already been done.. but it's certainly not as high profile as the Good Food guide.. or whatever it's called?).. Does anyone know Qatari? Ask him to promote it?

And as far as I know.. pet accessories such as beds/ food/litter are available from supermarkets and vet surgeries in Doha.. at least if you get them from the vets you're helping them to help.

Yes, we are looking for a puppy. What breed are they and how old are the pups your friend has?? If he/she still has them, we can come over with our twin daughters and promise a great home for 1 puppy immediately. we live in alKhor Community.

They should be shut down. Went to one near the airport months ago looking for a hamster, It was fuc*ing awful, walked in and walked out.

I will hoist that up the flag pole and see who salutes it!!

europuppy.com is a great website where you can order dogs. They have beautiful dogs and they are very well taken care of and they make sure to bring the dogs in with pet friendly airlines. Check it out if you're looking for a certain breed. If not a friend of mine has some puppies that they saved that need a good home. send me a msg if you're interested.

Hello

I would like to buy a puppy for my 2 young children. I would like a recommendation for a breeder or a place where i can buy a puppy that has been well cared for. I certainly don't want to go to the mentioned places above with 2 young children. I don't want to put money into the pockets of such people.

Any idea for a breed of dog that is good with children and that can be found here in Qatar. A small dog is preferred.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

I'm also a super doggy fan.

I have never seen dogs that are being sold in shops since i came to Doha in last September. It's terrble to hear those dogs were in such bad conditions.

Hopefully situations will be changed soon, and more people will treat them well.

Sorry folks, having major email problems, trying to sort them.

The pet shop at mannai was Animal Park. They have now relocated to the souk but have such limited space now it is preventing them from holding many animals for sale.....for now!

GSD & Pups are thriving now, doing really well.

The kittens desperately need homes, they are young but eating solids.

Heading off to Animal Kingdom this evening to follow up on the pup. Will let you know.

I believe it used to be on the junction of Rayyan Road and what was known as the Gulf Link Road (turn left at the roundabout for Jaidah Flyover). It was on the right opposite Mannai car showrooms.

I appreciate the directions are a tad vague.

Some of the more "well off" locals were known to have private zoos. The ex Foreign Minister (our neighbour at the time) sent some of his staff round one Friday morning to tell us that a wolf had escaped and to take care. We had a monkey visiting us at one time but that's another story.

Is that the one at Old Souk?

About exotics, it wouldn't surprise me if they do sell them here in Doha. I have actually seen a lion and a tiger in Dubai hanging out of a local's car.

I think it's complete idiocy to purchase an exotic wild animal, unless you are doing it for conservation reasons and have the proper facilities. Most people around here do it 'cause they think it's cool.

I assume that Animal Kingdom is the one not too far from the British Embassy (just off the roundabout/underpass).

Even in the 1980's/90's attempts were made to have it closed down because of the conditions in which the animals were kept.

I understood in those times that they had some very sophisticated animals available in Qatar. Big cats, crocodiles and other such creatures. I don't know if that's still the case.

Hi All

Went to Animal Kingdom last night, pup had gone (he reckons it's at the vet - yeah right) but is supposedly coming back tomorrow. Will go again and check.

Hi Poppy, you have no email in your profile, but you can email me via mine. I would like to help out, and I think it is a great idea to have the forum for pet care/responisbility.

Cheers Cavileer

BTW speaking of animal care: I still have a number of cats/kittens who would love a good home so if anyone is interested email me if you are serious and prepared to provide a lifelong home for these little guys and gals.

Update....sorry folks, didn't get to Animal Kingdom last night, promise to go today and let you all know.

I got caught up in 2 other emergencies.....

Firstly a pet shop near the animal souk - I regularly call in to see what is going on in these awful places. To my amazement (again) there was a female baboon and two babies!! Terrified in a cage under the stairs, cowering in the corner, being terrorised by the dogs in the cage next door.

I adjourned immediately to the CITES office and the primates are being confiscated this morning - I will report back once they are safe. I have requested permission to have them relocated (by me) to a sanctuary rather than be subjected to the zoo here. Again I will let you know.

Secondly into the desert....a female GSD had been thrown in the middle of nowhere with NINE pups (24 hours old). Fortunately we got to them in time and they are now settling into the shelter, being fed, cared for and loved.

Please do not be drawn into buying sick animals from pet stores, they see us coming and increase the prices immediately!! They take in sick, diseased animals in the hope that one of us will wander in and buy it at any price just to get it out of the situation. A sad fact!!! They will then use the money to buy another litter....and so it goes on.

Although QAWS has technically closed we are still trying every avenue to get back up and running. If anyone is interested in getting together, holding a meeting and helping sort this out email my profile please.

Vicky, I'm sorry you went through that. I know how horrible it is to see such neglect. I really hope Poppy can help. Let me know if there is something I can do.

Poppy, The animal Forum idea is a good one. There could also be a section for lost and found, supplies etc. Maybe Qatari could help with how to start up. I know you would need an administrator and/or moderators. Let me know how I can be of help. If you guys are meeting up to discuss it, let me know.

To everybody else.....stay away from the 'bad' pet shops. Going there and purchasing from them (even just collars etc) only leads to more animals being neglected for profit. Report them and tell them (if you do go) that you will spread the word that they are cruel and inhumane. Lets stop the abuse!

Did you have any luck trying to remove the puppy from Animal Kingdom last night? I have been worrying about it?

Please let me know....

There are also two rottweiler puppies in the "pet store" in Souq Waqif, when we were there last weekend. Two in a shared small cage and I am sure they don't care for them properly. Any chance you can rescue them also?

Hi poppy,

i will e-mail a letter of complaint to the address you provided. I'm happy that you may be able to help this poor puppy by removing it. Let me know what happens...and i'm sure i could assist finding it a loving home if you are able to remove it.

how can this be even legal? Where on earth do they get the animals from if they are in this state?? Do they just get them from the streets? i would love to help out on a forum of looking after animals too - lets hope we can teach people to treat pets as one of us, my dogs are my babies. i certainly wont go into that shop, but then i wouldnt go to pet shops out here anyways. Poppy can you please let me know if you have rescued that pup please? it will worry me till i know its safe

We always advise people never to visit the pet shops, please call us if there are supplies you need or can't find and we will help by putting you in touch with the right places to buy from.

I will call into Animal Kingdom this evening and attempt to remove the puppy (we have been successful taking animals away from them for the last 2/3 years).

Please email a letter of complaint to [email protected] We have a dossier at the Animal Resource Dept & The Supreme Council for the Environment & The CITES Department. We add complaints to the file as and when we receive them. Progress is slow but we are making a difference. The more complaints we put forward the better.

I would happily contribute to a pet forum, any idea's how to start it?

I agree, I have been there and observed the same. However, I never raised a pet and am always interested to learn more on how to treat them and keep them. Would someone create a forum to educate people on how to treat animals? This might help us further on how to treat each other. I would like to be the first member of such group.
