"Moreover oil, cigarettes and QDC contribute a lot to Qatar's economy."
don't put cigarettes and QDC near Oil & Gas together!!! Any income is about 0.00000001%
I assume it may be moved, there was a huge debate about it when many of us Qataris (who didn't know about QDC ever existing), were shouting about it in some of the local forums (example - in Arabic Google translate mistranslates it really bad - when it says "wine", it means "alcohol" and it's all a bad translation ), it also moved to most of the Majlis crowds... people were demanding to close it.... (I don't think they would).
Many were also complaining about women in the malls "dressing inappropriately", women on the public beaches "naked" (wearing swimsuits), public displays of affection (PDA is a personal digital assistant), asking for religious police like in Saudi, ...
If they ever make alcohol illegal that is when it can be sold for alot of money. This is what happened in Kuwait people bought it on the blackmarket and it was really expensive.
Can't say that any of that is surprising :) - having grown up in the former USSR, I know that people drink all kinds of shit. Aftershave was especially popular with a certain crowd. Especially when they tightened up the liquor sales during perestroika. Those guys smelled...fresh. From far, far, far away. Stuff like boot polish also makes an occasional debut. In Canada there is the same problem found largely on the reserves. Tends to be cleaners like Lysol though...
I dare say they did. Some years ago in Kuwait, there was a documentary on TV about alcoholics in Sweden. It stated how they were having bootpolish (which contained a minor amount of alcohol) sandwiches. It also stated that if you strained Nivea face cream through bread you would get alcohol.
Next day the local supermarket had moved the bread right next door to the Nivea.
Rauch grape juice is excellent for making wine. Date malt makes a very good lager.
Kuwait customs in the late 70's confiscated anything from "Boots" as they thought it was a brewing shop. Times have probably changed now.
I hear that they seemingly expect home brew in Saudi, with the giant jugs of grape juice on sale right next to the yeast for your shopping convenience...
I want to invite you to a meeting regarding legally advices to avoid/start a working conflict with our CEO.Attached you have previous correspondence between our department and CEO subjecting bonuses.

Regarding your generous offer as bonus I am forced to tell you that if you pay peanuts, you get monkey.
Please re-adjust the bonus to fit with my responsibilities, dangerous conditions at work and my vast experience in this domain. Also it will be a good stimulus for me in order to fulfill your increasing demands to our department.
Dear Gica, I really appreciate the sincere effort and time you've put in to make QDC an easily approachable, better and safer place. We are pleased to organize an Arts/cultural night which would sure be an enlightenment for the QL drinking team, followed by an inspirational seminar by the QL- Hangover technician. All employers would be given a special glass of beer, in addition to their monthly peanuts.
PS: Gica is requested to meet the QL - HR department to claim your bonus peanut bowl.
Regarding the above subject, please be informed that the QDC Working Schedule is the same as usual. If some changes will appear you will be informed. I hope.
We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.
That was one thing we never had. It's the impurities in the drink that causes the hangover (I understand).
All we ever had the next morning was a raging thirst. All our flash was tested before drinking in the local hospital path lab who actually produced some of the best flash I have ever tasted.
Wat will gonna happen for those guys making it as a bussiness... sorry for them,,, :-p lolz

What I heard is that at the end of the month they will be recalling all licenses and asking people to reapply through a more strict process. This is to weed out all the drivers posing as Engineers buying for their Qatari sponsors.
shellyjean - QDC is the only place that you can purchase alcohol to take home with you. It's Qatar's version of a liquor store, but much more expensive than you are accustomed to. I am pretty sure that I pay more than US$65 for my case of Guinness. (Other beers are not as expensive, but still.)
I vote for the QDC to move over to the West Bay somewhere :)
for non QP (who had their own syndicate) was known as The House on the Hill and was set back on the right hand side coming from Salwa Road to QDC opposite the slaughter house.
Those that remember the Untouchables darts team who played in the QIDL may also remember that the name Untouchables came about because of their proximity to the slaughter house.
what I heard they will move the current place to somewhere else. Years ago the location is in the middle of nowhere. Now after Doha developed rapidly the current location is in the middle of housing area that upset some muslim community

Hello Snessy...and welcome to AA!
OMG! I'm still waiting for my RP, I'm desperate to make the infamous trip to QDC. I'll be gutted if they close before I make it there.
Hi, my name is Snessy and I haven't had a drink for 7 weeks and 2 days!!!

You see! There will be always an alternative to QDC. Don't worry, be happy ! (Bobby McFerrin)
In Saudi they used to drink gripewater till it was taken off the shelves.

I went down to the syndicate the other day and spoke to the boss dude, he said nothing is closing, nothing is changing on a consumer level.

Drac, let's make some stash runs from QDC to your cave. The Jeep's running again, it was low fuel pressure.
Either way, I don't think QDC will be closing anytime soon, it's too much of a profit\business here =P

Brit, I was a master Brewer in KSA - here's my recipes and downloadable book ;o)
http://www.hasher.net/homebrew.htm
Dweller, We called it E 'n' T when I was there. Raw Eth is wonderful as it readily accepts all kind of flavourings :o)
dweller...
Been there, done that...Quite possibly the worst hangover I've had was the first time I tried sidiqi :-)
geez,dweller..:)
Haven't done that since Kuwait (Flash or Sidiqi in Saudi).
Then we discovered that ethanol was available for embalming. Cut 10 to 1 with water it was tolerable with tonic and was known as a "stiff and tonic".
the we will call u that time to take ur advise !!
other names for the old syndicate were the Bond and the little house on the prairie
There are some amazing brewers in Saudi..
in Saudi they make alcohol home made one ... so may u all should start to search for alcohol manufacturing recipe !!! :)
Having lived and worked in Saudi, I can assure you that the majority will stay, even if QDC shuts down.
Are the QP ones at Messaieed and Dukhan closed?
Pre QDC all syndicates were non profit making and a case of Amstel (330cc) could be had for QR 45.
shellyjean - QDC is the only place that you can purchase alcohol to take home with you. It's Qatar's version of a liquor store, but much more expensive than you are accustomed to. I am pretty sure that I pay more than US$65 for my case of Guinness. (Other beers are not as expensive, but still.)

What is QDC?
why not be another Saudi?
what happened to the 2022 bid......we'll have to wait till then till we can get alcohol that isn't classed as contraband!!
I can wait that long!!!......
If QDC closes, what incentive will be there for a majority of the expats to stay on except tax free salary.
Moreover oil, cigarettes and QDC contribute a lot to Qatar's economy.
So moving to a bigger space. great.. anyways they need a bigger space now with growing members..... can say Loyal Members (do they have an option??)
my cave it's empty!
..a lot of place to store booze!
..and cold one :)
what I heard they will move the current place to somewhere else. Years ago the location is in the middle of nowhere. Now after Doha developed rapidly the current location is in the middle of housing area that upset some muslim community
Better get my deposit back before they do a runner..:)

HE WHO DARES WINS
it was soooo busy there earlier,.. if these rumours keep going, they'll be driving the drinkers mad :P
Darn that Qatar Airways...always trying to get us to leave on their flights...
Just a rumour started by Qatar Airways so that they can fill the flights out..
