LOL....

"Moreover oil, cigarettes and QDC contribute a lot to Qatar's economy."

don't put cigarettes and QDC near Oil & Gas together!!! Any income is about 0.00000001%

I assume it may be moved, there was a huge debate about it when many of us Qataris (who didn't know about QDC ever existing), were shouting about it in some of the local forums (example - in Arabic Google translate mistranslates it really bad - when it says "wine", it means "alcohol" and it's all a bad translation ), it also moved to most of the Majlis crowds... people were demanding to close it.... (I don't think they would).

Many were also complaining about women in the malls "dressing inappropriately", women on the public beaches "naked" (wearing swimsuits), public displays of affection (PDA is a personal digital assistant), asking for religious police like in Saudi, ...

QDC Closed: I don't think so.

QDC Moved: Maybe

QDC Not Moved: Maybe

More restrictions: Maybe

If they ever make alcohol illegal that is when it can be sold for alot of money. This is what happened in Kuwait people bought it on the blackmarket and it was really expensive.

In Saudi they used to drink gripewater till it was taken off the shelves.

By BlackSea Princess• 28 Oct 2009 23:08
BlackSea Princess

Can't say that any of that is surprising :) - having grown up in the former USSR, I know that people drink all kinds of shit. Aftershave was especially popular with a certain crowd. Especially when they tightened up the liquor sales during perestroika. Those guys smelled...fresh. From far, far, far away. Stuff like boot polish also makes an occasional debut. In Canada there is the same problem found largely on the reserves. Tends to be cleaners like Lysol though...

I dare say they did. Some years ago in Kuwait, there was a documentary on TV about alcoholics in Sweden. It stated how they were having bootpolish (which contained a minor amount of alcohol) sandwiches. It also stated that if you strained Nivea face cream through bread you would get alcohol.

Next day the local supermarket had moved the bread right next door to the Nivea.

Rauch grape juice is excellent for making wine. Date malt makes a very good lager.

Kuwait customs in the late 70's confiscated anything from "Boots" as they thought it was a brewing shop. Times have probably changed now.

'Stiff and tonic' - that's brilliant.

I hear that they seemingly expect home brew in Saudi, with the giant jugs of grape juice on sale right next to the yeast for your shopping convenience...

Hangover?

That was one thing we never had. It's the impurities in the drink that causes the hangover (I understand).

All we ever had the next morning was a raging thirst. All our flash was tested before drinking in the local hospital path lab who actually produced some of the best flash I have ever tasted.

Either way, I don't think QDC will be closing anytime soon, it's too much of a profit\business here =P

Haven't done that since Kuwait (Flash or Sidiqi in Saudi).

shellyjean - QDC is the only place that you can purchase alcohol to take home with you. It's Qatar's version of a liquor store, but much more expensive than you are accustomed to. I am pretty sure that I pay more than US$65 for my case of Guinness. (Other beers are not as expensive, but still.)

I vote for the QDC to move over to the West Bay somewhere :)

for non QP (who had their own syndicate) was known as The House on the Hill and was set back on the right hand side coming from Salwa Road to QDC opposite the slaughter house.

Those that remember the Untouchables darts team who played in the QIDL may also remember that the name Untouchables came about because of their proximity to the slaughter house.
