i want to send a shipment (300 lbs) from houston, US to doha. can anybody help me with a shipping co. who can do tht for me. fedex or ups charges a lot, bcoz of the weight.
we are planning to go to birmingham and bolton with the kids for summer and dont know what to pack! help!
another thing , i have heard that the prices are lower there especially for brands like mothercare, bhs etc, is that true? Anything else worth buying, there?
Its the same as any other country, its the dickheads who pretend to run the country who spoil it! They have no touch on reality when they think only they know best.
...as it is here, most expats get a living allowance and housing paid for. That makes a huge difference compared to what one pays back home. It can really add up.
Of all the "Western" expats I have met, UK expats are the only ones who like Qatar better than home and don't want to go home.
It seems all you have to do is give them weather other than miserable rain, football on the tv, and cheap beer and they act like they are on permanent vacation; hence the popularity of Garvey's.
Last time i went past maine rd it was flattened, so what is there now? does naybody kow?
Seaside walking here - the cornich is an interesting place to walk along - bit like a proper UK seafront, sometimes even has the whole sewage thing going on like a propoer UK beach front. Other good locations are wakkra and Al-Khor fishing harbours or along the numerous good beaches, although they are are a distance from Doha. The inald sea provides excellent 4x4, great views and interestng short walks from the SUV.
Serendipity, thanks for the explanantion. Helps my English! The arcade is addictive...particularly those games where you drop a coin down a slot and try to get it to push the others over the edge to you!!! Yes of course, Brighton Pavilion. I forgot the name. It's beautiful. I'm coming to the UK on business next week so I hope I can make it to Brighton for at least an afternoon...candy floss here I come!!! and of course those coin hames!!!
Nah, I figured it was just work, I knew you weren't a Manc, you've said before you... erm, live on the Wirral don't you? Hazy memory. I've been to Hilbre island, is that close enough?
Oh, gosh, poor thing. I know all about broken wrists. Don't get me started. :(
I know of a very good wrist man over your neck of the woods if there are any problems/complications.
Diamondgirl, gaming room = arcade. I remember as a child on holidays we would have a bag of pennies and play for hours.
And we call cotton candy "candyfloss", cotton candy is the American term. I love it too. And the fresh doughnuts from the pier.
The palace, known as Brighton Pavilion is a really beautiful building, quite incongruous really, but a real gem of a building nevertheless, and very elaborately decorated inside as well. I love the eccentricity of plonking a really beautiful, Eastern style building in the middle of Regency Brighton.
I lived in Brighton, Hove actually too. Years ago though. Chanctonbury Road. I used to love walking along the sea front. I'm really looking forward to doing that in Doha too. I prefer living by the sea to being landlocked.

Spoilsport!
And depending on where your portacabin is, I may be less than half a mile away! I'm at the end of the Princess Parkway, near the Mancunian Way flyover. Where are you?
Do you mean Queen Victoria's palace? Lovely. I also love walking on the pier where there is a typical British gaming room (?) at the end. It's lovely to sit on the pier and have cotton candy or an ice-cream.
im from chesterfield in derbyshire. qataries i know have been sheffield and nottingham. both are within 15 mins of me. i have been up the snake pass to manchester when i was going for a job with virgin trains. made it just into manchester and car broke down. i am flying from manchester airport in 2 weeks to qatar. i think alot of qataries use to study at sheffield steel place as big steel company in qatar. some of my school friends have houses in london. egware rd ect... and study in greenwich
I know several Qataris who have houses in London and who go there regularly. The Emir himself has a big estate in the countryside to the west of London.
There are a lot of historical connections between Qatar and the UK.
Patriotism cannot be our final spiritual shelter; my refuge is humanity. Tagore, Bengali Poet
I also really like having a change of season. My favourite time to go is Spring or Autumn. Most Qataris tend to go to the big cities, especially London, but I think it's great to go into the countryside and explore that side of the UK. Using public transport is fun as in trains, ferries, buses and London cabs!!! I find that cities are very heavily populated but the opposite is true in small villages in the countryside. I went to a soccer match last year - Chelsea v Manchester United. That was exciting even though I was a bit tucked away in a glass box. If it wasn't freezing cold I would have preferred to be in the open air to get more of the atmosphere. The UK is a great place to go and visit in my opinion. It's got something to offer to everyone.
I go to the UK regularly. I studied there a few years ago. I really love it. People are very friendly and helpful - London, Brighton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Lake District, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Land's End, John O Groats, Belfast, Skye, Oban, Glastonbury, York, Manchester, Dover. Love going on trains (except the Tube in rush hour!). It's great to be in another culture, always lots to learn and of course very good for improving my English. Have I been near to where you live???
i know lots of qataries that have been to the uk. many to study and i have had a few visit me for holidays. they say they though the english people were friendly and they made friends for life, one i know loved scotland and even brought a static caravan 2 live in for 3 years. never heard them say much wrong about here. they do say its expensive in the uk and now seem to love to take the whole family to thailand. im told its very cheap.

Oh, I’ll take the on line swearing dictionary, I need to improve my English anyway LOL … thanks JBH! Could you please PM it to me?
I could send you an on-line swearing dictionary.
But it may be inappropriate.
It is very funny though.
Lots of very very rude terms and phrases I guarantee you have never heard before.
But be warned it is very very rude.
Or you can have a packet of crumpets.
Or shall I think of something else?

I'm dying to do that.

Yes,you are correct but at least there, you can shelter in a bar until the rain stops. Not like Qatar.
been to York :-) Summer can be sunny now and rain tomorrow :-)
If you are going in what we laughingly call summer, it might get up to.................... 30 c ! impressive hey!
will do. btw what temperatures should we expect?
Can i suggest you pack a waterproof coat cos English summers aint the warmest or driest around.
If you get chance, take a trip to Gods country( Yorkshire) and visit York, it is a fantastic city!
defenitely we going back to the UK if we have money. The only reason we staying here because of 'money' :-(

Having lived and worked in the UK I can attest that leaving it for tax reasons only is worth it.

A little part of Gods country.
Thanks for the lead on the wrist man, I appreciate that.
Although I did titter like a 12 year old when you said you know a good wrist man.

Nash road.
Bit knackered now, just come back from casualty, my lad has broke his wrist.
Went over his handlebars, but he is absolutely fine.
No prize yet.
Not enough contestants yet.
Definately not for you Serendipity, you're a local!
I don't live in Manchester BTW.

When I'm in London I usually take a trip down there. It's an unusual mix of historical and contemporary life. It's very cool!
Must be honest, I have a house in London although only live there when in UK. So I know some of the UK pretty well. Do I still count, JBH???!!!
Alexa, I LOVE Brighton!!! Were you happy there?
have I won yet? what's my prize? I was in a place called Adel (sp?) in Manchester...
You don't get a prize if you are from the UK.
The prize goes to the non UK peep who has been the closest to where I live.

Diamondgirl has come the closest up to now.
I am sitting in a portacabin in Manchester as we speak.
I'm going to let it run for a bit longer though.
London, although it has a lot is one of the places I would avoid like the plague.
Been there about 4 times, to the centre I mean, hell on earth in my oppinion.
