Arabic Lessons
By Tigasin321 •
For those who missed out on our initial Arabic lessons there is a course (I think it is free) about to start on 15 January at Fanar on Grand Hamad Street. Registration is 17-21 Dec for men and 24-28 Dec for women. The spoken Arabic course lasts two months and is on Mondays and Wednesdays. Registration is from 8.00-11.30 and 5.30-7.30. You need to bring a copy of your ID and a passport photo. Fanar is located on Grand Hamad street right opposite Souq Waqef
OK. I registered last week or so with FANAR and hope they will call me to inform that class can start soon, end of January 2009. The lady who answered the phone could not speak English so, I'm hoping for the best. I asked my assistant to speak to her and I trust that was sorted out. I did fax her the necessary information but every time I call to follow up, I can't get through.
/Btw, if anyone hears of the classes actually starting, please post it for info. Thanks.
But in the interim (and in case the classes at Fanar get postponed due to lack of students or they miss me out, maybe), I got a few books from MY and a CD on Arabic Conversation to get used to hearing the language other than the radio.
The one I got is arabic conversation from the "teach yourself" series and I finally sorted myself out with regard to the speakers, etc for practice during lunch break. It's pretty well structured and a good start. I was looking all over - Virgin Megastore and Jarir here but couldn't find anything simple enough for a beginner. So, bought from MY.
I've taught myself to read (but not pronounce) numbers while stuck in traffic jams a few months ago so that was easy enough. Amazing what one learns just by observation.
/Edit - sorry, I did find what looked like a pretty good one at Virgin Megastore - book and CD but I wanted to at least hear what it was like and look at the book contents but it was all wrapped up and unlike Malaysia, where they will open it for you to have a look before you buy it and reseal it after - have to go to the customer service people - but at V, they said cannot. I have to buy it if I want to open it. yeah, right. For QR400++, I decided no way I'm forking out that much money. I can wait till another more reasonable opportunity comes my way.

Thank you very much.
No one picking up the 2nd phone line at the moment though... (1st phone number is not in service). Maybe I'll try again at 5.30pm or 6pm. Original post was in 2006 - do they still run classes? I hope so.
Women to register on selected days and classes starting maybe January 09?

It's a very good attempt to learn Arabic. Arabic language relates to Semitic language Family which is very close to Hebrew language. It is a very rich language and has great influences on many other languages. I will assure that Arabic words are difficult but the grammar is more more difficult. It's the Language of Qur'an and our Prophet. Good Luck for all

Hello all,
What is Fanar? And could you tell me more about Arabic courses?
I have been here a few months and I don't want to waste any more time.
Do help me with information.
Does anybody have insights on Berlitz?
dear friend
i also want to learn arabic will you please tell me how i contact your teacher.
We pay 50QR a session. Session usually last 1.5 hours and we meet three times a week but we are going to reduce to twice a week as it is too much. Currently we meet Monday and Wed evenings and Sat mornings. Ahmed is very committed and I think he is a good teacher. He has to be patient with me because I am seriously thick.
where are these courses located? as i still don't have a car..
are they planning to start a new course somewhere soon? or may be I can join your group? how much is that?

but I am pretty thick. Some of my colleagues especially the Hindi speakers find it much easier. It does take a fair amount of work.
I know few arabic words, can say couple of sentences.. but the grammar i believe is not easy

I am taking Arabic lessons with three other people and an Egyptian tutor called Ahmed. He is very good but it is hard work. We have had ten lessons and I am still trying to master the alphabet and basic grammar. Its really tough!
should it be the Qatari ID?
