Are we slaves to technology...

I was in London for a couple of days. Noticed how people , especially kids are always on mobile phones and texting..

Now back in Pristina.. People have phones , but use them rarely. They relax. Chat with each other and seem to enjoy life..

Got me thinking... Are we in the West / Qatar becoming slaves to technology? We have become internet/phone junkies..

If so, WHY ????

It is quite true, blame parents too along with climatic conditions in GCC.

However note that audio-video interactive Net Games are more distracting then board games like monopoly, chess and carrom. We could not keep todays children away from computers, PS3, Xbox or Wii.

A lot of it is to do with the parents also...some of them find it easier to plunk the child in front of the TV, or PSP, so they can go about their work.

Doing activities with kids.. reading to them, drawing, board games, chess takes time, effort and a lot of energy.

Most of the parents have outside jobs, and they are exhausted at the end of the day. Moreover here in the ME they dont have the back up support that they might get from their extended family.

But I believe if you try you can, kick the dependence on technology. Motto Use only when required.

could blame GCC's extreme climatic conditions for this scenario.

Todays kids are Techno-smart, knows how to fly a plane (in games) but find difficult to just cross the road/drive safe with strict discipline :(

I'm sure like me, most of you grew up playing football, hockey, cricket and whatever sport suited you best outdoors. If it was a video game, Atari it was on a rainy day, but it was seldom brought on the play ground. There was outdoor roller skating, then came the BMX craze and things just fell into place for every season. We spent more time outdoors, than indoors.

The kids here in the ME, play more on their PS3, PSP, Wii, than they do outdoors. Sometimes you can't blame them, because the weather doesn't permit them to play outdoors.

But yes, I do feel we're becoming slaves to technology. If not us oldies, it's the kids here in the ME who most definitely are.

brit/victory,

we used to fight over who would bat first in street cricket or who would get the bigger mango when we used to steal them from the nearby mangrooves..

we would come back home all bruised or sometime with a little cut on the skin here and there..

children these days dont really know how to fight and bare pain...

we have learnt a lot from nature that they are now learning watching tv.

The old days of grazed knees, climbing trees, footy in the park, riding bikes, shinning up walls....

Children today don't know anything about them :O(

i feel bad for the children... we used to play on the field, climb trees, go for swimming to the lakes..but now most of the childern are addicted to online gaming..

many of these are based on the international political scenarios and the kind of weapons used nowadays. children are just learning how to press buttons and swivell toggles..

It depends on how you use technology. Like I use it only when needed. There are times I totally "switch off".

I saw a video of people making robots to play football. So in the future, we might even rely on technology for sports.. Pretty scary..

That's why going to my village is such a calming experience. No technology there except satellite tv but people aren't hooked to it yet
