Arm Twisting Techniques In Interview
Last Week I was called for an interview in HMC. My Interviewer, a 24- 25 year old chap with cocked hairstyle and hip hop british accent leads me to his cabin where my interview started. A complete 45 mints package of torture, mental stress and debate. He asked me questions and for my every answer i was contradicted & debated. He also asked some unnecessary questions about my past jobs. He made me feel totally incompetent amateur and stupid fool. For every sentence i spoke he made me feel like why did i open my mouth at all. After assaulting and battering my self confidence he gave me a test on computer for which i had no energy left. But still i completed my test and he pointed all my mistakes on the spot.
This person is from India (Kerala) and i am Sure he would appoint a Keralite Preferably any of his relative for this job at the end.I am feeling very low and Depressed. I want to complain about his behaviour so that punitive actions can be taken against him. Please suggest how and where can i seek help.
Are such arm twisting techniques used for all government job Interviews.
jewel, in the end, you are the one who knew what it was like so no need to explain further. anyways, as what mjamille said, move on from that experience. you have a job already. and again, the next time you will find yourself in this situation, excuse yourself and walk out. you are under no obligation to go through any interview that you deemed is insulting or inappropriate.

jewel said "I right now am working for a prestigious company (private)and have been taking interviews and in past have gone through couple of interviews but have not felt so embarassed and fool before."
Well, only you know best as you were in the situation itself, so thank you for your thoughts.
May I suggest that you also consider that times are really tough now and jobs are very hard to come by and everything, regulations and policies are getting tighter, etc.? People are unemployed or losing their jobs and it's good that you still have yours.

No, no drama, no, no, no, no drama
well at least you have a job now.. i think it's time to move on from that experience now...
Jewel - if you post things like this on a public forum such as QL you should be prepared for all types of responses. Insulting people who say things you don't like does not paint you in a very good light.
Richierich said "Jewel! it called Kerela Mafia..they prepared to hire thier own race, even though they are not qualified..it happenes to all company specially who have dominant karelite and malabari."
If you want to feed each others' negative presumptions, I'd say that's detrimental and counter-productive. What goes around, comes around.
I reiterate that "That's his job as a professional interviewer because he will be held accountable for you if he recommends that you be employed by HMC."
He was testing you on your merit. You are assuming that he will recommend employment based on nepotism. Please remember that whoever recommends anyone for any position WILL be held accountable if there are problems later. Companies employ people they know and trust to do the job well - whether they know the person's work personally, etc. or through tough tests like the ones Jewel was put through.
Do not assume the worst in everything. The only thing constant in life is change.
/Btw, preparing for the worst case scenario is a different thing altogether. Prepare for the worst but look forward or hope for the best. Because when you prepare for the worst, anything that comes along, you will be prepared for or pleasantly surprised.
//Live as if you will meet your Maker tomorrow but prepare as if you will live forever. All the best to you in your job hunt, Jewel and all those are looking for jobs. Stay positive. "Your attitude determines your altitude" - anonymous

An excellent reply to indicate exactly why you didn't get the job.
You are intimidated and angry from a mere post, one can only wonder how you respond in person.
Who twisted your arm for what - Since you have such a vast knowledge of the meaning of the phrase - state who twisted your arm to gain what??
Or you can just rant away as I suspect you will.

jewel, i do understand what you are going through. ive been in the HR practise for almost 10 years already and had come across these kind of interviewers- either my colleagues or prospective employers. they're not "debating" for the sake of gauging if you know the subject; rather, they just want to show you the upper hand. next time, if you feel that you have been manhandled or disrespected or embarrased, walk out of the interview. don't waste your time. since he is a representative of the company and does not in any way give good impression, who knows that the company is full of people like that. i say, good riddance.

Alpha Wolf, Wat do you mean. I think youn should take your lessons on meanings on phrases.
I right now am working for a prestigious company (private)and have been taking interviews and in past have gone through couple of interviews but have not felt so embarassed and fool before. Why dont you keep your so called thoughts to yourself and put your foot in your mouth. I hope you know the meaning of this phrase.
Before anyone criticises this statement of mine,
"If your (or other people's) criticism is that HMC's current staff are hopeless (which is denied, as I have no idea and it's not my problem), then HMC's top management probably knows about those criticisms and has set policies to ensure that things change for the better."
Even if I had to undergo an operation at HMC and died, I would say the exact same thing.. maybe posthumously, from the twilight zone.

"This person is from India (Kerala) and i am Sure he would appoint a Keralite Preferably any of his relative for this job at the end."
- Is your statement borne of fact or mere assumption? Because tallg is absolutely right.
- HMC - because of its reputation - high standards to maintain. Whatever the current (valid or invalid) criticism on the lack of quality of current doctors and nurses. In fact, if that's the criticism, all the more reason to be more particular in ensuring that they employ people who have the requisite quality.
"My Interviewer, a 24- 25 year old chap with cocked hairstyle and hip hop british accent leads me to his cabin where my interview started. "
- Your statement shows your thought process and biased perceptions. So what if he's younger than you? And so what if he looks like a young punk? He apparently knows more than you do.
"He asked me questions and for my every answer i was contradicted & debated."
- That's his job as a professional interviewer because he will be held accountable for you if he recommends that you be employed by HMC. By the way, it may seem tough and you may think you did badly but he may not think so. Do not assume.
"He also asked some unnecessary questions about my past jobs."
- Questions about past jobs are not unnecessary. They are to test you on what you know (or don't know). And also to test your attitude - eg. if you blasted your ex employer or were indiscreet with confidential information - the question that's raised will be whether you will worth the trouble to employ or whether you will be more damaging in the long run. Anyone who's indiscreet is a liability to any company because of the wider considerations of maintaining the company's reputation. If your (or other people's) criticism is that HMC's current staff are hopeless (which is denied, as I have no idea and it's not my problem), then HMC's top management probably knows about those criticisms and has set policies to ensure that things change for the better.
"He made me feel totally incompetent amateur and stupid fool. For every sentence i spoke he made me feel like why did i open my mouth at all. After assaulting and battering my self confidence he gave me a test on computer for which i had no energy left. But still i completed my test and he pointed all my mistakes on the spot."
- He was just doing his job. Your attitude during the interview would make the difference. Your current thread is kinda detrimental if you haven't lost the job yet.
BUT as I said, interviewees may feel that they have performed very badly, etc. but you will only know if you don't get the job. cross that bridge only when you come to it. And IF you come to it, pick yourself up and carry on trying. Persevere and a positive attitude will get you far.
"This person is from India (Kerala) and i am Sure he would appoint a Keralite Preferably any of his relative for this job at the end."
- I rest my case.
Jewel - If he swore at you that's a different matter and you should report it to HMC HR. You made no mention of that in your original post.
btw, it can still be racism even if you're both from India. You have accused him of treating you unfairly because of the region of India you come from. That is accusing him of racism, which is a very serious accusation. (I'm not saying if it's a true or false accusation, as it seems you haven't given us all the facts.)
Jewel! it called Kerela Mafia..they prepared to hire thier own race, even though they are not qualified..it happenes to all company specially who have dominant karelite and malabari.

Life is short, so try to make it long!
Sounds like this was not the right job for you.
I don't understand this "cornered" accusation. You were in his office having an interview. You could leave anytime. As someone else said he put the pressure on and you didn't come through. That's what interviews are for - to see how you act and react.
You really have no way to know or judge his intentions. And then you make the accusation that he was reserving the job for a fellow villager.
To me your post illustrates that it was right for you to fail the interview.
And what "arm twisting" was done? It seems you don't know the meaning of this phrase.

From my first hand experienced with government sectors for job interviews (including HMC), were conducted by a group of individuals, should be a panel interview. And why is it a one on one interview inside a porta cabin?
Unless, it was conducted for the screening of applicants?
the man is ranting and venting his frustrations here. He stated that interviewer's nationality to connect something- probably a practiced thing hereabouts, like QP perhaps? The statement is merely incidental or contextual and I think he's just being matter of fact. The interviewer may be from MARS and would instinctively but irrationaly favor his own. Life is so unfair, right?
Let's see the forest instead of the tree.
tallg, How do you measure one's abilities. is it by insulting the opposite person on his ideas and opinions and sit tight to see how he / she reacts. for your information I am also an Indian so the question of racism does not arise. But i feel you dont know these Malbaris. when there was this debate going on and he felt he was heading nowhere. he said irritatingly ok please lets stop it i feel you are too much *******. Wat do you suggest now.
you got caught in the line of fire.. that bullet had my name written on it..:):)
...Avada Kedavra..
you got caught in the line of fire.. that bullet has my name written on it..:):)
...Avada Kedavra..
interviewed a lot of people here as well as in India, but I never grilled anyone..I myself have been grilled a lot of times..how I can forget that IBM interview 4 years back? I came out thinking I was in the wrong industry..
But what I mean to say is there is no point blaming the interviewer..they will ask you questions based on what they feel the job requires, they might even pull you into debates to see how confident you are regarding your answers..but as long as he did not insult you, talk to you in a degarding way and did not harrass you physically or mentally, he is within his rights..
if you did not like the way the interview went, you better not accept a job offer from them, even if they accept u..
...Avada Kedavra..
Oopsie, you were addressing to Voldemort. Okay forget what I said.
Jewel, I guess you got me all wrong. I am merely questioning.....what rights does he have to corner someone who has come for interview. His aim should have been to select the best candidate for the job. His intentions were hideous, still, he could have been polite. He does'nt have to prove that you are unfit for the job, he could have later informed you that they have selected someone else.
May be it is my poor english. I apologise.
and see their HR. If you really felt that and can convince management that you were not given a fair treatment then by all means do the right thing. Nuthin to lose but your claims man!
His interview technique doesn't sound too unreasonable. Perhaps he was deliberately putting you under pressure to see how you reacted, and contradicting you to see how you handled it. Interviews aren't supposed to be all nicey-nicey. They're supposed to push you to the limit of your abilities so they can ensure they're getting the right person for the job.
The fact that you've immediately played the racism card is sad.
malabari..........they are always intrested in asking unnecessary questions dosen't matter if it relates to your past job or not.
Aana free, jaana free,
Pakde gaye tho khana free.
thanks Dear, But i just want to teach him a lesson so that he does not do it with other or would never take more interviews again
it should served as a challenge to you.. you could atleast proved to him that you're worth of the position.. anyways..better luck next time...
i feel you belong to the same category and you must be making life miserable for people working under you, if you have any. he didnt ask me any questions out of this world and for your information i was able to answer all that he had asked for and if you read the forum well i have said i was debated on my answers and not because i was not able to answer. hope you read well before you comment. and you Probably teach your kid to help him answer his question well to his teachers.
Disgusting, why did he feel the need to corner you. He could have been polite to you during the interview even if he wanted to employ his kin/friend/whatever. I don't think you should blame yourself and loose your confidence. Better luck next time.
Im appalled !! How could u just sit there and take this Bull**** from this Jerk?? I wouldve dived straight for his neck! MORON..ur rite after all that job is going to someone from his own community have no doubt. Look elsewhere.
i felt the same but is it advisible
So you couldnt answer any of his questions, so you wil sue him for harassmentm, asking for punitive damages..
you really made my day..
what will be next, my kid will sue his teacher for punitive damages of 1 million , bcoz he flunked his test...
...Avada Kedavra..
i felt like kicking him on his right place also
i would have thrown the papers on his face and walked away.
