Assembling a gaming PC
By dawestsides •
I'm planning to build my own gaming rig,but I have to know which components I can purchase locally, and which ones I'd better to buy online( Amazon,Newegg,...)
My core dream config:
Mobo: nforce 780i for future SLI
CPU: Q6600 (for a potential OC)
GPU:High end Nvidia (maybe gtx260/280 will be soon more affordable?)
A convenient PSU for such a config...
What about the case?
mr_listener kindly refered to the Gigabyte solution (Tornado computers in Sofitel area)but it looks like the price can go pretty high.
I searched for other brands, sadly no official resellers here in Doha for MSI,XFX,EVGA,Asus,...
So I need QLers advice on this.
Thanks.
Happy gaming :P
that's the tip i was looking for!

@dawestsides
I bought my Q6600 at Bios Computers in Sofitel area for QR. 790. make sure to check the sticker on it and look for the code "SLACR" meaning this is G0 revision. I'm currently running it now at 3GHZ stable(9x333 at 1.2625 vcore) stress tested with prime95 for 7hrs. with average temps of 48C under load and 27C idle.
Just came back:nothing interesting there...

...is quite interesting.
So Gates offered to provide IBM an operating system, even though he didn't have one at the time, and that OS was Kildall's baby.

Microsoft is hiding so many things, and they have a highly aggressive marketing...Monopoly is what it is.

This might be interesting for you, dawestsides:

Maybe you also don't know that DOS was originally developed by Digital Research?
I will not look at the Q6600 in the sameway...lol!

It's mentioned that Sun,Fujitsu and Texas Instruments together developped that proc.(by the way, again I've never heard about it...silly me!)

Think again, dawestsides. Their Sparc processor beats Intel and AMD by miles.
For me,Sun Microsystems means Java apps,I didn't know that this company is involved in hardware,I was thinking of it as a soft company only.

I've never heard about this website,Bahraini's are lucky to get free Aramex shipping.
But some items, like graphic cards, are overpriced, even with free shipping. And they charge 120 qr to Qatar(DHL).
Anyway thanks for sharing.

dawestsides, the "crazy" thing is that the SUN computers exist since the early 90s, but nobody considered them seriously except for the experts. All "blindfolded" by Intel and Microsoft.
is crazy about the ultra 40M2...

Go for this, man.

The EVGA 780i is a great motherboard. I overclocked the 9300 from 2.5ghz to 2.8 in about two minutes. Manual is good, you get lots of cables, good drivers, etc. Make sure you use an nvidia video card for best results. The 780i will allow you to use up to three video cards in SLI mode. I haven't found a need for that much display power, as my monitor is only 1680x1050. If you are driving a bigger monitor, you may want to consider two video cards to maximize performance. For a few more dollars, you can go with the 790i board, and use DDR3 memory, which is faster, but more expensive. I almost went that route, but wanted to keep the cost of the PC to $1500 (in the US).
I do recommend going to the 9300 or 9450 processors. They aren't much more expensive than the q6600, and give better performance overall. And, if you use DVDecryptor or IMGBurn to create DVD's, you will use all 4 cores. Same with many Adobe products. Crysis and Bioshock also use all the available cores.
coelacanth, multi core chips are made up of separate complete processors on a single piece of silicon. Some AMD dual core chips are made up of quad core chips where two cores failed quality control. Each core can run a separate process from any other core, giving equivalent performance to 4 single processors. When evaluating multicore chips, you do not add the speeds of the cores. Each core runs at the stated speed. If you overclock a q6600 to 3ghz, which I've seen, each of the cores runs at 3 ghz. I use and specify multicore machines for my job. I know how these things work.
Now, Intel quad cores are made by putting two dual core chips in a single housing. That's why they can be marginally slower than comparable AMD chips where all the cores are on a single piece of silicon and the communication between processors isn't across the FSB.
Oilacct,
The speed that they mentioned on the processor is the OVERALL speed of all the cores. imagine a 2.4 ghz Quad core running on each core, that's a total of 9.6Ghz!!! I advise you read some more about the Quad and dual core technology. It's still a single processor, they only divided it into 4 cores to give a dedicated processor on every application, hence, there will be less lagging if you are doing multiples application simultaneously. If you are not a die-hard overclocker who will push every bit of your processor power and memory to the limit, i wouldn't suggest using a water cooler coz it's very hard to maintain. Get a 120mm heatsink with fan with 2000rpm, a front and rear fan for your casing to circulate the air, i don't think you would encounter any more problem.
It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!
It might sounds crazy but what about water cooling for CPU/GPU?

wish u all the best,, and happy gaming!!
am waiting for the pic/s.. :)
This will be my first try,and money wise better to bring the latest components,a 2nd upgrade after maybe 2 years or less would be costly.
Will give you feedback and post a pic of my baby!
Thanks for all,appreciate it.

Its a never ending race!! u buy the latest today, 2moro it would be a dying technology anyways..
so its up to you, ur requirements, u need to chk the market and buy the stuff that suits ur need and pocket.. a gaming rig can reach way up to 10-15k and more.. the more sugar u add the more sweeter it gets.. just be wise :)
I've E8400 @ 3Ghz stock (can be OCed to 4.xGhz as per the net); Gigabyte mobo EP45T-DS4P and 3D Aurora 570 casing; 4Gb ram (but winXP shows/support 3Gb only :( u need to have 64Bit XP version to support more ram as per info on net); 500W PSU; Creative X-Fi Fatality Xtreme Gamer sound Card; XFX 7300GT 512DDR2 (heheh yeah i know am way behind the time, need an upgrade here).
i havent faced any problem with any game so far incl. BioShock, crysis, Assin's Creed, Stalker etc..
Call 5316149 and chk if he has EVGA 780i..
Good Luck 2U.. and happy buying
The nforce780i is the chipset I'm looking for,and the EVGA!Read great reviews on it,so what's your opinion?is it so OC friendly?
For the Quad-core,I agree, soft&hard upgradability is to be considered,no doubt that incoming games and apps will take greater benefits from multi-cpu technology.

A few corrections for coelacanth. Each of the cores in a multi core chip runs at the stated speed. Thus, all 4 cores in a 6600 run at 2.4ghz. For some games, the dual cores may be faster, but for the future, a quad core is better.
My PC is built on an Antec 900 case, EVGA 780i motherboard, 4GB DDR2 RAM, Q9300 quad core overclocked to 2.8ghz, and I may be able to get it up to 3.2. CPU cooler is a Zalman, one of the big round copper finned jobs. Video is an XFX nVidia 9600GTS. Hard drives are a 150gb WD Raptor and a 500GB WD standard drive. Monitor is a Samsung 2053BW, a great monitor. I can play Bioshock, Portal, etc at full resolution and most features cranked up to max. Crysis isn't as fast as teh others, but that's true on any system. Crysis does use all 4 cores.
If you consider Gaming for your rig, go for the Core2Duo, instead of the Core2Quad. There are only a few numbers of games that uses the Quad core technology, so there aren't any benefit in getting a quad core, especially Q6600 which is more than a year old. Go for the E8400, E8500, or E8600. Don't be amazed by the "Quad core"thingy because the E8400 is much faster, considerring 3.0Ghz Processor speed (meaning 1.5 Ghz per core, Q6600 has 600Mhz per core), 1.3Ghz FSB (Quad core has 800MHZ FSB). for the casing Gibabyte GXZ2 (if im not mistaken) is pretty decent and cheap. I have Nvidia 8800 Ultra 768Mb DDR3 Video card and it fits perfect. Consider buying a 750W modular PSU to support the PCI-E power requirement. Also, for the memory, go for Amazon. you can get a 4Gb OCZ with heat sink for QR420, includding shipping cost. Motherboard, go for Gigabyte EP45 series, which offers built in raid on their built in SATA, which speeds up the read/write response of your HDD.
Just my 2 cents.
It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!
you need to check the version number or something like that on the box. I dont think the dealers out here can help you much in this. You gotta go and verify it yourselves.
thats right. unless you go for a high-end processor it doesnt make sense to buy it online. same is the case with memory.
After some googling,i know now that there are two versions of the Q6600;the B3 which was the first version, and the newest one,the GO,which is more overclocking friendly.
How to make the difference...?
-No one can make you feel inferior without your consent-
If I buy it online (Amazon= 189us$)it will cost almost the same if you consider the shipping charges...so better to buy it here.
Thanks.
-No one can make you feel inferior without your consent-
processor with fan. thats all.
With the box and the stock intel CPU cooler?
- No one can make you feel inferior without your consent -
around 780 riyals for q6600
I will have a round in that area...How much for a q6600?
- No one can make you feel inferior without your consent -
cpu you can buy locally. mobo buy it online
For this tip...
mr-listener told me the same thing,looks that's a popular case.Anything else?
- No one can make you feel inferior without your consent -
if u buy a gigabyte case....get the aurora 3d 570....not the normal aurora 3d cuz those graphic cards will be too long for the case.....or get the akasa mirage..
