Beware of buying diamond jewellery !!
By drshukla14 •
I had a bad experience after I purchased diamond jewllery from S** Jewellery at Souq al Mujran. The certificate given by them was wrong - the diamonds were of inferior quality. When I tried to return it, they want to cut 25% according to 'rules' that 'making charges' are cut. I have left the jewellery at their shop with a complain letter, and am awaiting their written response so that if not resolved, I can take this to the office of consumer affairs at the ministry of trade and commerce.
Bottomline: Insist for IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificate when purchasing diamond jewllery.
What is the value of the diamond jewel you purchased ? Is it considerable or low value? Do you know the size or the carat? If the ornamant has smaller stones, it normally comes with lesser quality diamonds. But like "Nakshathra" type, you may get good quality.
I prefer buyin it back home, atleast I know what I am getting.
But back guantree for Diamond is usually only for the weight of the Diamond. making charge will be deducted everywhere..
is there a place here where we can have our diamonds tested for quality?
JUST DO IT..............GOOD WORK
S** Jewelery people called and offered to make a deal at 15% deduction and returning the cash.
Although I am not still at peace with my decision, I accepted the offer because I thought the consumer protection complain might be a long-drawn affair.
S** jewelery still maintains that their certificate is correct. However, I am not convinced because I had the diamonds checked at 3 independent labs in India and the certificates from all 3 agreed that the diamonds were indeed inferior. (I could get this done without additional expenses, because one of my cousins is a jeweler in India.)
Specifically: the issues were
1. The Clarity was inferior: according to S** it was 'VS' (very slight); but the diamonds were actually of 'SI' (slightly included) grade. (See http://www.igiworldwide.com/en/4cs_clari.htm )
2. The Color was inferior: 'G/H' according to S**, but there were some pieces of an inferor grade of 'I'. (See http://www.igiworldwide.com/en/4cs_color.htm )
Sky also did not give me a written response to my complain letter. When I insisted, the store manager asked me leave my address (which I have mentioned in my complain letter - I seriously doubt if the store manager even read my complain!) - and they will write back. Let's see....
All in all the value of diamonds was put at less than one-third of my purchase price due to these defects.
I had bought the jewelery for my sister, and it was she who discovered the inferior quality of diamonds in India. Therefore it was embarrassing.
I have learnt my lesson now - as far as quality of diamonds is concerned, DO NOT rely on the certificate from the shop - insist for IGI certificate.
Nevertheless, thanks for the encouragement, fellow QL-mates!!
it happened to me with sky as well...i wanted to buy a cross made of white gold , so i went there and i found one...after a year maybe , i needed to clean it , "they put it in a solution or something" so when i took my necklace..i was in lebanon , so the man told me that he had to remove the figure of crussified jesus , cause it's gold , but as for the cross itself it's silver!!!!
