Bikinis banned from the street

A coastal town on Spain's Mediterranean coast has banned people from wearing bikinis on its street in a bid to improve its image.

Salou, on the Costa Dorada close to Barcelona, became infamous earlier this spring after thousands of British university students descended on it for the annual Saloufest.

Newspapers in both Britain and Spain gave columns of coverage as the festival descended into anarchy, with hordes of drunken and scantily-clad students trawling through the town's streets.

Now the local council has brought-in new by-laws aimed at preventing a repeat during the summer holiday season.

Those caught drinking alcohol on the streets or having sex on the beach could also be prosecuted.
Beachwear will be banned from all but beachfront bars and restaurants.

Alberto del Hierro, Salou's Councillor for Tourism, said: 'It is not normal to go the market with your packet on show or round the tourist sites in a thong.

'One shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets or enter public buildings in unseemly apparel. It gives the city a low-class look.'

OK thanks.

My point was that rules in any country, whether we like them or not should be adhered to.

Nothing, but there are actually rules...although way too many people do not seem to be aware that Europe actually has them....and a lot of people who actually do know, seem to be keen on abusing them, in all kinds of ways.

What happened to freedom of expression ?

WTF

these morons can't see a woman in one piece, or even in two piece.

That's why decent Europeans largely avoid such places. Sadly Spain has become a haven for chavs and other low class people.

Shame really.

Well done by the mayor, about time too. I just wish more people would put decency over commerce.

What a shame. They could just change the law to a bikini with a head scarf and all will be happy
