Birds also need water

By lawa

This time of year, as our thoughts and our gazes turn more and more to our backyard feeders, many of us tend to overlook one aspect of helping birds survive long cold spells: Birds do not live by food alone.
Birds also need water – not only to drink but also to bathe. When feathers aren't in tip-top shape, they don't insulate the bird's body as effectively, and the bird must burn more energy to stay warm at a time when it is a matter of survival.
when the temperatures drop below freezing, the birds' usual sources of water can be in short supply, and the birds must spend time looking for water when they could be feeding or conserving energy.

That was before humans discovered global warming making climates as terrible as it is now.

Surely birds were surviving long before humans came along ...

specially when you know that rather than wasting your food, you actually provide meals to so many of God's creations, it's a pretty amazing feeling. And as time goes by these birds actually become acquainted with us..specially the mynas. They even notify us that the food is over now!

wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birds#Water_and_drinking

-Some desert birds can obtain their water needs entirely from moisture in their food

-Seabirds can drink seawater

other birds however, still need a source of water to drink from.

We always put food out on our kitchen windowsill for the birdies. Its fun watching them eat and outsmart each other. Survival of the fittest to say the least. Currently the larger doves rule, whilst the mynas come a close second. Oh and the Bulbuls are the most hilarious. The best part is cos our glasses are shaded we can see them but not vice versa..it's like having your own bird sanctuary without imprisoning em feathered friends!
