Surely a sign that the end of the world is nigh..

The world has been turned upside down recently. Banks have been bailed out, the UK has been hit by freak snow storms – and now, Porsche has launched its first diesel.

The firm was buoyed by the success of the Cayenne SUV, but as most off-roaders sold in Europe drink from the black pump, it couldn’t be without an oil-burner any longer. And here it is: the Cayenne diesel.

Outside, there are no visual differences to the petrol model – not even a special badge. The powerplant hasn’t been tuned by Porsche, either. Instead, the car uses the same 240bhp 3.0-litre common-rail V6 TDI as the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg. It’s mated to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

I used to own a Skoda in the mid ninties.. In those days Skoda was not a desired car until it was overtaken and revamped by VW.

Now looking at the way things are going I guess there will not be much of a difference between a Skoda and a Porche..

I still remember having a sticker on the back windscreen of my white skoda saying.. "My other car is a Porche".. God did I know it coming..lol

You are ofcourse correct. However, the danger perhaps is that Porsche will lose its "niche" image..

I would say it's "back to the roots". In the end it was Dr. Ferdinand Porsche who developed the VW for the NAZIs. All the technology in VW is a Porsche child anyway, Now they are just combining what belongs together anyway. VW has a much larger budget for research and development, and Porsche just saves a lot of cost if they adopt VW (Porsche) technology.

Zayd.. I hear this story from my father inlaw who is swedish..

He says that Swedes like the Italians used to think that their cars and other manufacturing industries were the best.. Like Saab Volvo, ferrari, until they realised that other country also make good cars..

Same scenario with Porche I guess they have come to understand that they also others out there who are doing the same and have to accept and follow what others are doing..

you're right UK, but i'd like to think that if they stayed small then this would have never happened...yes they'd be making less money with just the boxster and the carrera but they'd have much less costs as well...the cayenne and the cayman and that new rumor about a 4 door saloon (the panorama was it?)...porsche should have been happy being porsche and stopped trying to be like vw...their cars were never for the people, why try enter a market that others have been perfecting for about a century now?

You have a point. I know that Audi has won Le Mans using a diesel. But a Porsche with a diesel just doesn't fit the bill. Some things should be left alone.

here's a fun fact...the annual budget of ferrari is less than ford's quarterly phone bill. it's always sad when a company like porsche decides to go mainstream...pretty soon we'll be getting cut-off by little, no option, 1.4 litre porsche hatchbacks that go for $15,000...it's the death of an icon :(

You heretic!

Yes, the hedge fund escapades were superb. Perhaps GM and Ford should learn from them.

As far as the rebadged Touareg is concerned, I hope it doesn't happen. There's already too much similarity between the Passat and the A6.

porsche made more money from its hedge-fund activities last year than it has ever made from selling cars.

this year, the tiny car manufacturer is going to secure ownership of VW, and so the badge will become simply a marker for a top-of-the-range touareg.
