Bollywood actress wants husband via TV!

Well I've already applied... Hope Rizks and Pajju don't hear of this, because I don't want competition :))))

Seriously though. Is it just a publicity stunt or an example of female empowerment ?

Bollywood's Rakhi Sawant takes search for a husband to prime time TV

A reality television show based on ancient Hindu rituals is aiming to strike a blow against India’s tradition of arranged marriages.

Rakhi Sawant, a Bollywood dancer, actress and television host, has refused a union brokered by her parents. Instead, she has promised to find the perfect man herself — with the aid of a prime time TV series.

Rakhi Ka Swayamvar (Rakhi’s Search for a Husband) has attracted more than 12,500 aspirant grooms from across the subcontinent. The show is due to begin later this month but the outspoken celebrity’s promise to marry on air has already whipped up controversy in what remains a rigidly conservative country.

The series will be based on the ancient but now largely neglected practice of swayamvara, where a young woman picks a husband for herself from a group of hopeful suitors, often by putting them through a series of tests.

The most famous example appears in the Ramayana, the 2,500-year-old Sanskrit epic, with Ram, the Hindu god, chosen as a husband by the heroine Sita after he wins a trial of strength by bending the bow of Lord Shiva.

“Over the past 500 years girls in India have lost the right to ask questions about who they marry,” Shailja Kejriwal of NDTV Imagine, the channel that has created Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, said. “I really hope this series, which is all about a strong woman choosing her own husband, will address that. It’s about empowerment.”

Conservative Hindus, who have vehemently opposed the infiltration of Western cultural ideas into India, are almost certain to object.

A spokesman for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, India’s most powerful hardline Hindu group, made plain his disapproval of the series. “We prefer arranged marriages,” he told The Times. “They are part of an old and good tradition.”

For her part, 30-year-old Ms Sawant has said that she is looking for a husband who combines the best attributes of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan — three hugely wealthy Bollywood superstars.

The producers admit that it probably rules out the thousands of would-be husbands who have applied to appear on the show from India’s poor rural villages.

The audience will be asked to vote for a winner, but Ms Sawant will make the final decision on whom she marries, helped by friends, family and a psychologist. Contestants are now being vetted, with background checks being run on each man’s health and wealth.

Explaining how the idea came to her, Ms Sawant said: “I am a cultured Indian woman with good values and I have reached a stage where I need a companion with whom I can share my love, joys, sorrows and success.

“I want to solemnise my marriage in the presence of all my fans who have been supportive of me throughout — and what better way than getting married on national television?”

The question was - Is it just a publicity stunt or an example of female empowerment ?

Would love to hear more about this "ancient practice of swayamvara". Can it work in today's society ?

Ash...agree morality issues are max in entertainment, however, the people associated with the field of entertainment is very small (and I can say this for the people associated with say cinemas, tv etc.) compared to the people in the world otherwise .. so morality compromise being max in entertainment seems not comparable.

However, my point was not whether someone is cultured or not... it was just the yardstick used to say it..

I would also look for the definition of culture in the context..the Indian culture... as you perceive... so that we an avoid any arguements if we want to move on.. else for me it was shut case to be discussed in a lighter vein..

anyways... will be off for vacation soon.. so may be can have some TTing before that.. else later ...

HGL - Missed you the other day my fren...

But there is always the next time..

Next in line - nothing as such... lets see if TTing (Sorry Oxford) is possible....

Back to Topic -

Agree morality compromise is happening in every field.. But if proportion of people doing so.. and the necessity of doin so is max in Entertainment...

And I would really be curious to see if you can deny the above statement...

And as Verisi says.. Rakhi Sawant (RS is Royal Stag..Pls don feedle with my emotions related to RS).... Is anything but cultural...

Cultural technically means following a particular culture... in such a way tht majority accept it to be a specific culture...

Else everyone has his own culture to live.... :)

If you didn't like the way I ended the first sentence, go running to your mommy and ask her to wipe off your tears, I don't care...

My comments were about her referring to herself as being cultured...

If you don't have the IQ to grasp that, then H G F ...

"comparison of good and bad people was limited to the roles of a portrayl as a bad person on screen, relative..."

I know you are trying to use big words like 'portrayal', 'comparison' and 'relative' in the same sentence but that sentence just doesn't make ANY sense

By happygolucky• 6 Jun 2009 16:26
happygolucky

Vermin...

First I didnt like how u ended the first sentence ...."get it"... we have our own opinions...no one imposes one on another...however, if u meant it otherwise I take back this sentence of mine...

Having said that ... comparison of good and bad people was limited to the roles of a portrayl as a bad person on screen, relative...

Cultured or not cultured is a altogether different...

Anyway going by the post for me its just a advertisement gimmick.. words are coined to draw attention..

there are may words in the dictionary that I would use to describe Rakhi Sawant... smart, innocent, childish, genuine, outspoken, sincere, open-minded, jolly, sentimental... but NOT cultured... get it?

I am not saying if they are good or bad people... I am sure Rakhi Sawant is a nice person to be with, I've seen her interview by Karan and she came across as very sincere and genuine... but that's besides the point

By happygolucky• 6 Jun 2009 16:00
happygolucky

Verm...no la...

I dont think even low of her where is the question of thinking high... rather I dont even think of her...lol

My point was, just because anyone and everyone on the screen once in a while end up doing similar roles with same kinda clothes, etc etc... do we want to see all of them in the same light...if nit, then why single out RS...

On the sidelines actors like Pran, Prem Chopra, Amreesh Puri all of them do all negative roles (mostly) raping women, kidnapping etc. etc. onscreen.. so should we stamp them bad people and keep them off, though we are otherwise given to understand that they are basically good people off screen...

Hope I am able to correlate...

back to the thread...that was my point... "hamam mein sab nage hain"... right... sorry for typing hindi in english..... will translate it literally though "all are naked in their bathrooms"...is that right... I stand corrected if not...

But again as u said ""Men use ...women are ready to be used... all are equally culprit and responsible"... isnt it also happening in all walks of life of which we may not be privy of... no offenses meant... please no one jump on me ...

And BTW... I am sure you are doing your job that u are paid for (read on some other post of yours)... PRETEND TO DO (hope I wrote it right)....lol...

Isnt she just playing a role at which she is good at, on the screen ... now this is keeping her peronal life outta question and just going by how she projects herself on the screen...

That way all the women on the screen then get charaterised like that as sometime or the other they also have done it...

eaglemmanuel - But we do not want to focus on these points.. coz it is not entertaining to know this... lol..

Bigger problem is entering into entertainment business in India is next to impossible..

Its dominated by a few families and they do not let others come and establish themselves....

This was a way she could make name for herself ( ill-publicized) but she has....

Gals who come in via Casting Couch way... (90% do) don last long.... unless media holds them as a brand people wanna watch...

Ashwin - "She doesn have a father.. had raised enough money to get her siblings get married .. bought a decent place for her mother to live...

She had to do it at the cost of self-respect and loose talks about her.. but she never compromised on fulfilling needs of her family... as there was a time when she was the only bread earner at home.. :)"

Hmm.. so there's a steely drive and determination - for her family. I think that's to be admired, whether or not it's a publicity stunt. She's not selfish and just doing this all for herself.

I personaly think its a publicity stunt and nothing to do with empowerment.

She comes accross as very shallow by firstly talking about following ancient hindu rituals and then saying that she "is looking for a husband who combines the best attributes of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan"

Lastly, as a model and bollywood star, she is not restricted by the norms of "arranged marriages". She can pretty well please what she does and who she does it with.

britexpat - "Seriously though. Is it just a publicity stunt or an example of female empowerment?"

...“Over the past 500 years girls in India have lost the right to ask questions about who they marry,” Shailja Kejriwal of NDTV Imagine, the channel that has created Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, said. “I really hope this series, which is all about a strong woman choosing her own husband, will address that. It’s about empowerment.”

- Good on her. Must be very difficult to break away from tradition. There are pros and cons to both arranged marriages and freedom to choose. It's a matter of what works for any particular individual. But I must say that an individual who is used to (eg. grown up with) a particular way of life, will see it as being restrictive, will not be able to see the bigger picture because their emotions rule. If they detach from their own situations, they will see more clearly and be able to decide what's best for them personally.

"For her part, 30-year-old Ms Sawant has said that she is looking for a husband who combines the best attributes of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan — three hugely wealthy Bollywood superstars."

- If it's just wealth, then that'll be kinda shallow .. but who's to say? Normally, the ones who are wealthy through their own (ethical) efforts have substance to their character. Whatever floats her boat.

Ram-Sita

In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Sita is married to Rama the only one strong enough to lift the Shiv Dhanush and string it.

Draupadi swayamwara

For Draupadi, in Mahabharata, Aspirants had to hit a fish's eye with a bow and arrow. This fish was just an image on a rotating wheel, which was rotating on a rod. The rod was placed in a pan filled with water. The many suitors had to pierce the eye with a bow and arrow only using the reflection created by the water in the pan. Prince Arjuna, the third among the Pandavas, succeeds in hitting the fish.

Based on the "Ancient Hindu Practice" the selection is based on the person's ability.

Wonder what Rahkee's "term" for ability would mean?

Size or Stamina?
