Its all about the money and prestige. And buying a dubai island shows you have both. And in today's world, that's what's important (unfortunately)

Am not that expert (due to gender considerations) but I think crochet is something different from knitting.

Knitting is for making cloths using wool or cotton thread (like sweaters, hats, gloves)

crochet usually to make table covers using fine thread. the needles used are different

Generally can't stand 'em myself. So far I see nothing wrong with Pitt and Jolie. I hope it works out for them. Pitt came from nothing and worked his azz off. Jolie pretty much did the same (of course Daddy Voight was always in the shadows but I think she has matured quite nicely).

They are working on the next movie "Angelina and the chocolate factory" for the amount of kids she adopts. Anyhow this is a bad investment, but why would they care lol. I appriciate the work they are doing, its really good and i agree with Diamond.

You could be right I am not sure myself but there was a great deal of scandal about it and especially when she arrived in the Airport.

Again with the Island, what if there is a flood, I don't even like to live on the second floor of a building either as I don't feel safe. lol

I believe one of the issues Madonna ran into was Malawi didn't/doesn't have the same international adoption laws as the countries Angelina Jolie adopted from. Madonna was one of the first to adopt from there - internationally.

Even back in the US, I'm so leary of even looking at a house in a subdivision that has been "built up." And it seems like they're everywhere now. I don't want to live on dirt that you just piled up real good. I want it to have been sitting there for a really long time.

is that all that "new" island stuff...what's going to happen a few years down the road when the underground shifts and it all comes tumbling down???? I mean...land was created but to have land that is "re-created"???? No way would I buy something like that..rather deal with what nature did, not man. At least I know if there's an earthquake, it had to be from nature's hand, not manmade mistakes...

The discussion got way off track, and we are all entitled to a personal opinion, a great deal of which is initiated by the media and television, good if she is with the UN, good if she is respected there, and good for here if she buys a private Island.

One thing for sure, she can't buy her way to heaven.

pwb78

Yes Madonna did, and she did receive an enormous amount of criticism which Jolie did not. The one mans' food is another man's poison.

The UN needs a lot of support and money but if you take into consideration what goes into they get paid well that is another discussion point.

There are many famous people working for the UN Bob Geldorf and many others who don't get half the recoginiton Angela Jolie gets but are investing all their time for under devloped countries, again doesn't belong here.

and I'm not judging her...that will be done by a much higher authority in the long run. She's just hurt a lot of people. But, she is who she is and I hope she continues to help children.

I guess what I am getting at is that I don't respect her. There's an old saying...you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I hope she is truly having a good heart with what she is doing. I just have my doubts. she is a very pretty woman tho.

Madonna got tons of negative publicity for adopting that little boy and even commented how difficult it was for her. Being a celebrity brings on publicity no matter what you do. Maybe the UN has even more volunteers now because of the publicity they receive from Angelina Jolie. They know what their doing making famous people UN ambassadors or they would have been calling on you and me. They need to be in the spotlight as well to raise money and awareness. You can't discredit what she has done for the UN because of her "private" life being well documented. Just a thought.

By anonymous• 13 Nov 2007 10:21

It may be a fact that she is well respected in the UN and they also get a lot more publicity through her presence. Perhaps she made a good impression on you and perhaps her motives are valid, however be sure she receives as lot of publicity for that and every time she allows a photo shooting or gives an interview she gets money, so if she is doing this in the name of the UN then it is only just and right that money should be given to charities.

Many, many more people help the UN and are never mentioned, now because of the Island thingy again in the news.

Madonna has also adopted foreign children and does a lot of charity work for Africa but she doesn't get the publicity Angelina does.

There are motives and there are motives.

This story has surfaced before - except then it said she was turning the island into a paradise for Africans...

I'm just one that believe generosity begins at home. Its when you go for the splash that its a bit ingenuine..and adopting children from other countries when there is a need in your own is a splash.

I'm not doubting she does a lot of work..I just have serious doubt for the reasons behind it.

Just a personal opinion and..I think the issues of breaking up marriages is my largest detractor on her lifestyle. Seems she doesn't really care what or who she hurts if its something she wants.

By diamond• 13 Nov 2007 10:08
diamond

She has a biological child and has adopted three children. I don't think it makes a difference where a child comes from if it is needy.

Perhaps you know more than I from TV and US papers.

When I met her and briefly worked with her I thought she was a genuine person with regards to her work for the UN. She is well thought of in UN circles. She puts in a lot more hours on humanitarian issues that are reported in the celebrity news column.

That's the basis for my opinion.

however, I've just watched from back home for so long as to what she has done in the past. Track record speaks for itself. yes, she sdopted 2 children from 3rd world countries..but you know what?? There are SOO many children back in the US that need adopting also, that will never have the opporutnities that her children have. Also...none of this started really until she got into the limelight, which isn't to say she couldn't change, but I don't see it happening. I still think its mostly a show for the public.

Like Han said...they chose to buy an artificial island..the disruption in the ecosystem from that is enormous. Just take a look at the island of Cozumel, Mexico...Used to be the most pristine and wonderful place to scuba dive...Mexican government gave permission to cut a mile long swath through it so the cruise boats could come in to improve tourism. Now the reef is dying, one from being destroyed, other from all the people who have no clue as to how to take care of nature when they DO dive. Making an island is just an enormous impact for the oceans' ecosystem..its just rather hypocritical of them to do what they are doing and saying they are making an ecofriendly atmosphere...

And yes, buttercup...I DO think so...

If they reclaim the land from the sea they disturb the fish and the the system, corals and such like.

At one time I heard that the UAE wanted to build the first underwater hotel - don't know what happened to that plan.

However, they managed to get publicity again for it, and also QLers time spent for comments.

I can hear the concern of an Environment Engr..... that’s true han….all these man made islands are adversely effecting the environment and ecosystem.

These celebrities do all sort of things for publicity; they are super rich they do all these charity things to save the taxes and for publicity stud. “Turning it into an environment showpiece”... don’t make much sense.

The thought of building an artificial island is already distorted. Too late for those reefs and fishes. I'll bet you he will have a little a nice time fishing...

Could it be they want to initiate a new Whatever film or Perhaps a commercial?

Quote from that news piece :

""that the film stars have bought an island with a view to turning it into a showpiece for environmental issues with the hope that it will encourage people to live a "greener life," the web site said."

I wonder how its going to be a show piece for environmental issues while the entire process of creating the island has disturbed the existing environment in the first place.

At least this is what her publicity manager is telling the world, from my point of view they should live their lives as they want, and buy what they want, however, the media coverage she gets paid for will probably give her/them more income than her films. Not to forget the name Brangelina.

I don't remember Brad Pitt nor Angelina getting so much publicity before they got together, unfortunately being a celebrity is not easy and the media tend to produce stories without any great foundation.

Morning Scarlett, how are you this fine morning?

I will respectfully disagree. I think she does a lot for important issues. She is tireless for the UN, not afraid to get her hands dirty either, she has adopted children and brought attention and extra aid to the countries of those children. She gives a third of her income to good causes, etc.
