Bring back Garvey's

We are a Multi Cultural Family, with Mixed Race friends, here in Doha. Whatever the problems are ( and Racism is not one)....I hope it can be fixed. There are many families, (from many Nations) who need your facilities and hospitality. It's one of the few establishments that really provide an afternoon/early evening environment for Families.

Some of the people on this board have indirectly/ directly contributed to it’s closure. You throw the Racism Card like it’s a spare “Joker in the pack”. You should be ashamed.

Apologies to those who don’t like the place...don’t reply. Your work is done!

Jane Curtin (1976–1980)

Jane Curtin anchoring Weekend Update.Jane Curtin replaced Chase a few shows into Season 2 when he left in 1976; she remained as anchor until 1980. Curtin finished Season 2 solo, but was then paired with co-anchors Dan Aykroyd (1977–1978) and Bill Murray (1978–1980). A frequent feature of Update during this time was Point-Counterpoint, in which Curtin and Aykroyd made ad hominem attacks on each other's positions on a variety of topics. Aykroyd regularly began his reply with "Jane, you ignorant slut," which became another of the many SNL catch phrases (Curtin frequently began her reply with, "Dan, you pompous ass"). Other popular running features were John Belushi giving editorials; Gilda Radner's characters Emily Litella and Roseanne Roseannadanna. During Curtin's tenure as host, she opened each Weekend Update segment with Roger Grimsby's "Here now the news" sign-on, and closed with Chase's "That's the news. Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow."

She died of cancer I think...

Here's my view, even if no one asked.

If people want to drink, they will do so. There are bars in the hotels where people can drink. Closing Garvey's will not reduce the amount that dedicated drinkers will consume alcohol.

So... that being the case, why is the government, or whoever, channeling the patrons of Garvey's into hotel bars. I'm not saying that *all* of Garvey's patrons were 'rig pigs' (such a lovely description) but from my experience plenty of them weren't the sort of people that hotels would want at their bars.

Is there some sort of policy in place in Doha to ensure that bars in hotels will be full of ex-Rugby Club and ex-Garvey's drinkers, since that is the sort of impression they want to give international visitors.

You can proceed jumping on me now for suggesting that ALL the patrons of the 2 places mentioned above are bar flies, but that's not what I'm saying. I just think it would be preferable if the patrons of those 2 places could have somewhere to drink and relax in comfort other than hotel bars. (Unless of course they want to match the number of rowdy and out of control Qatari drunks in the hotel bars with rowdy and out of control ex-pat drunks.)

If you don't like Garvey's then don't go - simple! If you haven't been, then you don't know what it's like, so can't comment. Some people like it, some don't. Same as some people like Qube and some don't, etc, etc. Personal taste. But Garvey's is sorely missed by lots of people, so it would be a real shame if it didn't open again.

Thank you fubar, that is precisely my point. I can't seeing people take their kids to that place.

I think Gypsy's point, like ngourlay's, is that Garvey's isn't a 'family' club. It's a bar that opens during the day to whoever wants to come, and then by night it operates as a bar that turns people away based on their skin color.

I've been during the day and it's not really so bad. Nice for a cheap beer and some stodgy bar food. But by night it's not exactly a place to take the wife and kids for an evening out.

I would like to see the place re-open, but not in its current style.

I've seen it, and the owner helped the guy back onto his chair he didn't kick him out, and there were kids around as it was a Saturday afternoon!

Gypsy,

I have personally never witnessed "Rig Pigs Puking" in Garveys on an afternoon, but I can assure you if they did they would be asked to leave. What i have witnessed first hand is extremely drunk guys in Thobes vomiting and falling about the floor in both Ramada Sherazad and the Mercure top floor...neither were asked to leave and in the Ramadas case they solved the problem by closing the bar.

Please dont stereotype oil and gas workers we like a dink as much as the next man... some people just cant conduct themselves with consideration for others. Its not just alcohol either... how many inconsiderate people do we see in City centre smoking.... not all of them are "Rig Pigs"

How does watching Rig Pigs puking on the floor at 4 in the afternoon constitute a family enviornment?

Although they should reopen, keeps the drunks all in one place.

Just open the darn place, just because is not my cup of tea, does not constitute to keep it close.

I've been there too. I was at a child's birthday party. They closed Garvey's for the day. For one day, it was Al Azizya club rather than Garvey's. I was sat at a table talking to other dads from many nations.

There was a Qatari (his wife's family own the place), a Nigerian brain surgeon, an Iraqi TV presenter, an Indian journalist, a member of a trade delegation. We chatted while our kids played in the pool. It was nice. Relaxed. I even covered up the sign at the entrance so it was no longer a European club. How civilized.

Later we had some kebabs and birthday cake. The kids played party games. Really, it was the kind of place I'd like to go to more often.

However, I can't because on regular nights it's just not the kind of place I want to be associated with. I could take an Indian friend there and I'm sure we'd be let in, but for certain he wouldn't be let in on his own, or with other Indian colleagues. And if you deny that, then you're just not being honest.

I've been there with people who are not British and not white and never had a problem. maybe some of your friends get refused entry so you immediately jump on the racism bandwagon. allegations are easy to throw around and can do a lot of damage to innocent people's reputations.

Make it an Indian club, with cheap beer, and family surroundings, and I'll probably turn up with my kids.

A European club, with strict door policies that exclude certain nationalities, is not my cup of tea. I for one would be happier if it didn't re-open. It gives Brits a bad name.

This translates to: does not know ...... opinion based on gossip...... is stuck up ... oxymoronic.

Perhaps if you had been there you might have the same opinion or not

...personal opinion only. I need somewhere to take the Family, that doesnt include ridiculous Annual fee's and is Child friendly. Hotels out here are for visiting businessmen.

SuperNurse..have to agree tho, the pool is poor...
