British teacher charged with insulting religion and inciting racial hatred.

Oddly enough it appears that the voice of reason belongs to the youth for a change....

"Sudan's top clerics have called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam."

AND

"A Muslim youth organisation, the Ramadhan Foundation, called for Mrs Gibbons' immediate release."

I fear for the woman now. I think she has suddenly become a pawn in a much bigger, diplomatic incident. If this teacher gets the 40 lashes, I fear here will be a backlash on the streets of the UK.

that I would never see this sort of thinking still here in the 21st Century.

why can't people see that others WIL make mistakes and instead of making an example of them, inform them so they don't do it again.

I wonder when all of this will end, why can't people just enjoy life instead of wasting all their energy on hatred and holding grudges ?

Scarlett...agree 100% with you and your posts.

Cornellian....agree with you too. If this lady gets the lashes it will fan the flames of an already volatile situation between Muslims and Non Muslims in the UK. It will happen, the country is waiting to explode.

Stealth.....Im not being patronising but that is by far the best comment ive read from you. Absolutely spot on. The teacher has now become a pawn in a bigger game.

Not only that Scarlett, but it'll also harness feelings of resentment and hatred towards Muslims in the West, which will in turn fuel the extremist theory of how "The West hates Islam", which means more recruitment, more bombing, more terrorism, and then the West will hate muslims even more, and so on. It's a never ending viscous cycle.

be lashed, himself, if that's his opinion of one of his teachers' punishment for doing something that was done in ignorance. Nice to know he backs up his staff...sheesh

You know..if the rest of his expat staff really should rethink working there or even IN Sudan....they are NOT immune to this either and who knows what else might "offend" them.

at least some of the new generation has their head on straight. The Sudanese govt needs to pull theirs out of that dark orafice and join the rest of the world. All that this will do is cause hard feeling between nations and a reticence in expats coming to help with teaching and other jobs. I KNOW I certainly wouldn't go over there, no matter HOW much someone paid me, because I would be afraid of offending someone with doing something that I didn't know was wrong...and getting jailed, lashed, stoned, whatever..

Although the situation is awful, atleast the new generation is opposing is , which is good news. I think it's all ridiculous, and someone needs to shake the sense into the Sudanese govt.

when someone who is trying to do good things for the children, teach them, let THEM choose what to name a teddy bear, and then get arrested and charged. That poor lady will NEVER come to think of Muslims in a good way..which is sad because most of the Muslims I know are good, kind people.

Frog, you say its probably the politics that are running this...what about the students' parents that started the whole issue that got her arrested in the first place? Its just so underhanded a way to treat someone who is trying to teach about BEARS, for goodness sakes! It was the CHILDREN who chose the name...not her. the parents should have spoken to her first, informed her it was wrong to name a bear Muhammed, for whatever reason, and then the headmaster could have taken it up with her if she still didn't change the name. NEVER should she been jailed, much less anything else. Jailed/Deportation due to naming a stuffed animal..how ridiculous can that be??!!!

as frog mentioned earlier consider the underlying politics.

The Sudanese govt has got a good pawn to use against the west especiall the UK which has been pretty vocal in Darfur.

what I understand (from what I've read), it's not her that choose the name. It was one of her student. Why blame on her? About the name, anybody could be call Abdullah, Mohammad etc. and I don't think so she was thinking of the Prophet (SAW). This is very unintentionally, unlike what happened in Denmark last year.

The story in Yahoo news, very sad.

They should deport her and banned from the Muslims countries. Not lash a 54 years old woman.
