Briton 'beaten to death' for swearing

genesis
By genesis

A British tourist was beaten to death by officers in a Dubai police station after being arrested for swearing, it was claimed yesterday.

Lee Bradley Brown, 39, was on holiday at a £1,000-a-night hotel in the Arab state when he was thrown into a filthy cell.

Police sources say he was ‘badly beaten up’ by a group of police officers, leaving him unconscious on the floor.

Inmates told how they watched officers bundle him into a body-bag and drag him out of the building.

During Mr Brown’s six days in Bur Dubai police station, guards refused to give him enough food and water and did not let him see a lawyer, it is alleged.

His sister learned about the attack when she received a phone call from an inmate on Sunday, claiming her brother had been beaten.

The prisoner found her phone number on a photocopy of her brother’s passport which had been left behind in the cell.

She contacted the British Embassy in Dubai, and on Monday an official was sent to visit Mr Brown at the police station.

But the official was turned away by an officer who claimed Mr Brown did not want to see him and had ‘declined consular assistance’.

His sister, who did not want to be named, received another phone call from the inmate saying he had seen her brother’s body being taken out in a body-bag.

A source told the Daily Mail last night: ‘He suffered a really bad beating which must have caused some terrible internal injuries.

‘The poor bloke stood no chance at all. At one stage he was thrown against the concrete wall of a cell and landed badly.

If the beating incident is true, I am afraid it was a ploy to kill. Looking at the picture, it doesn't seem he would check into Burj Al Arab on his own. As he was invited to Dubai by an unknown women, its possible, she had made prior arrangements for this man to be put up there.

I have a feeling, the guy had known some deep secrets of this rich influencial women and she wanted to kill him to bury the secrets with him. So, she used her clout in the police department and killed her. In such deaths, the investigation is generally a farce.

I may be wrong though.

I don't think the Daily Mail broke the original story, and it has been picked up most media outlets, including the Gulf Times.

And which major English tabloid isn't anti-Muslim?

By anonymous• 16 Apr 2011 14:38

Uranus I would say its because the british embassy know a bit more about what's going on and aren't going to start an international incident over a drunken-women beating-sot who's sister managed to get an interview with one of the most rabid anti-muslim rags in the uk.

Pilgram--the Daily Mail story I posted above is a follow-up on the original story the DM ran the day before, which I believe noted the swearing claim.

Most worrying is that the British government is doing nothing to investigate this. Perhaps this is part of the cutbacks Cameron's coalition are making.

Frankly I would trust the gulf news to report this better than the daily mail which is notoriously anti-dubai. There was also no mention of the man being arressted for swearing. The burj al arab said they called the police after he severly beat a maid and attempted to throw her off a balcony, blood tests after his death confirm the prescense of large quantities of alcohol and hashish.

Personally I think this whole thing smells fishy and I while I think the cops may be guilty of negligence and perhaps roughing the women beater up a little I don't think they beat him to death.

"Cherchez la femme!"

Literally means "look for the woman."

In the sense that, a man behaves out of character or in an otherwise inexplicable manner because he is trying to cover up an affair with a woman.

if it was mentioned in the news (the word "swearing"), and many commented, they should know what that crime is?

Mystery female host 'invited' jail victim to Dubai

A British tourist allegedly beaten to death by prison guards in a Dubai jail was invited to the Arab state by a mystery woman, it was claimed last night.

Lee Bradley Brown, 39, was on holiday at a £1,000-a-night hotel when he was arrested for assault and swearing and thrown into a filthy cell.

His family have demanded government help and believe the nature of his death is being covered up by the authorities who claim he died of natural causes – even though witnesses saw him being ‘badly beaten’.

The self-employed maintenance worker flew to the Gulf state without telling his family, who don’t know how he was able to afford a luxury suite at the seven-star Burj Al Arab – one of the most expensive hotels in the world.

Yesterday a prison source said Mr Brown, of Dagenham, Essex, had told inmates he had been ‘invited to Dubai’ by an unknown woman.

It emerged last night that the British Government will not conduct an independent investigation into the death – meaning his family may never know the truth.

Instead of sending a pathologist to examine Mr Brown’s body for signs of trauma, the Foreign Office said it would rely on the authorities in Dubai – even though they have claimed there were ‘no signs of torture’ and he died after choking on his own vomit.

Where did you get this info from?:

"as far as authorities and the british embassy are concerned the case is closed"

According to this morning's paper:

'Last night, the British Embassy said they were putting pressure on the Dubai authorities at 'the highest level' to find out what had happened, but it was too early to say whether Britain would send a pathologist to ascertain Mr Brown's cause of death.

A spokesman said: 'What we are doing is working closely with Dubai police to pressure them to investigate the circumstances.

'We spoke to them at the highest level and highlighted the seriousness of it.'

It emerged yesterday that consular staff from the British, Canadian and Australian embassies visited the police station to check on the welfare of their citizens and to obtain statements regarding Mr Brown's death. '

No merci, I don't really read 7 days as I find it a bit tabloidish and they make a lot of mistakes in their stories.

The gulf news said today that he choked to death on his own vomit after he was arrested for trying to throw a maid from 6 story balcony. They also said that there was no evidence he had been tortured and as far as authorities and the british embassy are concerned the case is closed.

I doubt we'll ever know for sure what happened.

desertshark, I feel this is highly improbable in case of an asian as the poor guy will not have the courage to oppose the cops during his arrest. The cops physically assault the inmates only under extreme circumstances.

But, they will hit the inmates back in case they are hit first by them.

By anonymous• 15 Apr 2011 11:43
anonymous

Just imagine if they did that to a british and european guy then what they must be doing to the poor and illeterate asians out there and getting away with it because their embassies would never interfere and then they would say the guy just fell down and died by hitting his head on the floor.

The guy has a only regular job, but he can pay afford the £1,000 a night stay.

The guy is on vacation in a strange land, and what does he try to do, ....throw a chambermaid off the balcony.

He is beaten to death....for "swearing" at someone.

A bit odd, all of this

to death because he swore - he will have said and done somthing to 'annoy' when he got into Prison.

Come on - Dubai - the hub of International Travel, the Tourist Hot Spot off The Gulf?

They are the decadant ones of The Gulf - I doubt very much the Police in Dubai would beat up a 'drunken Brit' -I suspect they deal with them all the time and much worse.

They are either really, really bad cops and deserve to be charged with manslaughter or he did much worse then what is reported.

'An unnamed police official told the paper: "These reports in the media that he was beaten by police are a pack of lies."

The official added that the British tourist was vomiting from the day before his death but did not complain or ask for medical help.'

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/probe-demanded-as-briton-dies-in-dubai-custody-2267644.html

Well that's the Police pretty much caught in a lie because, if you remember, they also said to the visiting British Embassy official( who visited on the 11th April)

that Mr Brown did not want to see him and had ‘declined consular assistance’.

From the accounts so far we can ascertain this timeline:

*Wed 6th April:

- Mr Brown arrested and taken to Bur Dubai Police station.

*Sometime between Wed 6th April and Mon 11th April:

- The sister of Mr Brown recieves a phone call saying her brother is being beaten.

- The sister informs the British Embassy in Dubai

*Mon 11th April:

- British Embassy Official visits Police station and is turned awy

- this is also the same day that Police 'say' Mr Brown started vomiting but did not complain or ask for medical help.

*Tues 12th April:

- Mr Brown dies

- The sister recieves another call to say her brother has died.

*Tues 12th/Wed 13th April:

- Mr Brown's family must have been offically told of his death by the British Embassy then for it to make the Thurs morning papers.

Seems to me that the Police have been caught out by their very own statements before an investigation has even had the chance to begin yet.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3526529/Cops-beat-Brit-Lee-Brown-to-death-in-Dubai-cell.html

Lee Brown, 39 - arrested after a hotel row - was stripped and handcuffed before being pulverised by up to six officers with their feet, fists and batons.

He was then dragged unconscious into solitary confinement where he was left battered and bloodied for three days before dying of his injuries.

One prisoner at the Bur Dubai police station - who The Sun contacted by mobile phone - said last night: "It was inhuman. He was cuffed by his hands and his legs. Officers were punching and kicking him everywhere.

"He was bleeding from the head and hands and crying, pleading for them to stop."

Another witness said: "He was assaulted so badly his head split open. Then he was left to rot."

Must be more to the story--I hope it comes out.

This reads like an account of a vigilante death squad that police run in South America. This guy upset the wrong people, who used the police as goons. It might explain why his companions did not contact the consulate earlier.

Maybe the lax laws and economic chaos is opening Dubai up to organized crime on a large scale.

Dubai Police doesn't seem to be like this. As my colleagues also went to police station and they treated them very well. They offer them soft drinks and food in the evening. After a light verbal investigation, they were released. I also visited the Police Station in Dubai 2 times and found them very soft and friendly while they treat even the foreigners. As AK said, there should be some other story behind that. Dubai Police is the most civilized police in the Gulf.
