Canada may ban ‘light’ label on cigarettes
Published: Sunday, 12 August, 2007, 02:13 AM Doha Time

OTTAWA: Cigarettes in Canada would no longer be allowed to be labelled as “light” or “mild” under proposed government regulations announced on Friday.

Already last November, three of Canada’s largest tobacco companies agreed to change their labelling in anticipation of the federal regulations, saying they would stop using such terms by the middle of this year.

Use of the terms has also been eliminated from marketing in the European Union and Australia, but not in the US despite recommendations in May by an expert panel. Canadian Health Minister Tony Clement announced the proposed regulations, which will carry a 75-day comment period.

“Research has shown that many smokers incorrectly believe that smoking ‘light and mild’ cigarettes is less harmful to their health,” Clement said in a statement. – Reuters

Have they done their homework right? And here I was smoking Ultra Lights thinking each ciggy would take off just 3-4 seconds from my life instead of the regular 7 seconds if you smoked a Red.

If smoking lousy ultra lights is of no use, then I might as well go down smoking the a regular one and atleast get better kick from it!

It's only a matter of time before they do ban cigarettes completely in Canada. We have one of the lowest ratios of smokers in the world and cigs are about 10 to 12 dollars a pack. Canadians prefer smoking other things. :D

They should just go ahead and simply ban cigarettes! :-)

Sorry for that comment but it just happened to amuse me. It doesn't matter what the lable it is bad for the health, and it makes some others very wealthy while many people are dying from the effects every year.

I have to admit never having smoked in my life it is easy to comment on the ban.

As far as I am concerned they can ban all light, heavy, blue, red, or whatever description they have for cigarettes they would do the world a favour.
