Hey Fellow Canadian,

Don't take this site to seriously, people on here can be very strange and the site is not a reflection of the attitudes of expats in Qatar. You will make friends, but not on this site, most these people just want to argue, belittle, hijack, terrorize and frighten newcomers, its sad really. Well welcome to Qatar. Take your time and meet the right friends through work or other social activities. Get involved. Get the Time Out magazine at Carfour to find out about events upcoming and great places to eat. It usually takes some time to settle in here so don't rush it. And forget these idiots on QL, they don't mean anything by it, most are just bored and can't help themselves so they find it amusing to try and pick fights with newbies.

Hey Rachel ,

I just moved to Doha recently ( from Canada) for about a month now.

let me know whats .

By qatarisun• 17 Jan 2011 22:18
qatarisun

the guy didn't mean skin color or passport. he clarified himself: people with the same mentality. I would add, with the same interests. here is an example. Group of indians would discuss a crocket game, which i had no clue about before i came to qatar. how the hell I can participate in their discussion? and would it be interesting for me? Now. These days the Asian Cup is in town. Today at the office our Jordanian and Syrian fellows gathered in front of huge TV screen and were cheering for their teams. I was chatting on MSN. They asked me, why don't you watch "football"? I said: "FOOTBALL"? you mean "soccer"? nah, I prefer hockey. They started laughing and making jokes. I found it pretty much discriminative.. lol..

Wow, that's a lot of different subjects for a thread the likes of which I was looking to post soon, too! :)

Welcome to Qatar, Elkalio, and I hope you will soon find a like that you like.

I hope the same, too, having been here only 11 days! :) Too much time, too little to do... :-/

If you're actually organising a meetup, count me in. And keep me posted.

Good luck!

Elaph ; calm down .... Iam not racist just read my post slowly , I don't care what race u belong to all I want is to meet people from Back home, there are alot of canadians that come here and work that are from different backgrounds, and also they love canada . I wasn't referring to them I was referring to the people that use the passport as a tool and they don't give a damn about Canada . Those are the ones that I dislike there act and not there race or language or whatever , get it ? I am up for a meetup to chat who is in?

u agree to what exactly ? you aren't even here in the country and you already agree? those plastic canadians don't have the proper skin colour and cultural background to fit in your beloved Canada, that's why they ran away, stop being so prejudice and ignorant.BTW even though they have the passport, yet they don't have the right colour to get the same pay as their white peers here in Qatar. Some of the comments here are so primitive and full of hate and ignorance.

Welcome to Qatar, you have alot to learn and if you are really serious about broadening your horizon, you better change that attitude of yours and meet with people who don't share the same mentality as yours, you might be able to learn something knew, the world doesn't revolve around north america and europe.

Qatar is cheaper than Canada if you know where to go and shop, most of the canadians don't know where to shop, because either there is no canadian tire here or they can't speak arabic.....

By elkalio• 14 Jan 2011 03:57
elkalio

nomerci: i like what u say and i agree, but hey if u are in qatar u would know where do people from europe or north america chill at? people with the same mentality as ours. i dont care white, brown, yellow, green or pink skin

By nomerci• 13 Jan 2011 22:21
nomerci

elkalio, don't be offended. There are a lot of what is called "Plastic Canadians" over here. People that get a Canadian passport to be able to work in another country for more money than they would have earned with their original nationality. They don't give a hoot about Canada, usually.

Those people are as Canadian as sushi. ;)

There are of course exceptions.

Either Gasoline or Petrol but should not call it gas!

Do you say 'Vase' instead of 'vaseline'?

Then these Canadians should use lots of vase (flower vase) while having sex.

I think you are stupid, since you don't know or don't understand that GAS is short form of Gasoline .

And according to Wikipedia, "Gasoline or petrol, is a petroleum-derived liquid mixture which is primarily used as a fuel in internal combustion engines... In North America, the substance is called gasoline, a term often shortened in colloquial usage to gas"..

comprendo?

sania121 said "u can park ur car anywhere no one will ask". I would be careful with that one if I was you. I have already had two parking tickets, and on both occasions I thought I was parked correctly, legally and safely. Parking tickets also give you points on your licence here.

brit...i dont know why it's named after a rope fiber: a strong fiber obtained from the Philippine abaca plant and used in making rope and paper.. (manila hemp also called manila)..

there must be a reason but i really don't know why.. :)

I agree with LP as we in the Philippines call it gas station meaning "gasoline" station... GAS does not only mean the state of matter as to solid, liquid and gas..

if you happen to visit manila you will never find petrol station ..instead you should ask for GAS station... :)

I found much difference as compared to canada ,now i am a house wife here so i am happy to have a maid here,,there u will have to do all the work, here u can ask people to do ur work..driving has no rules here even worst than canada, u can park ur car anywhere no one will ask and yea dont call elevator, they call LIFT here..:)

Correct as always..

There are ofcourse other words too:

flat - apartment

Spanner - Wrench

Tony Blair - Raegan's bitch

3 course meal – snack

Allies - Target Practise.

It's 'gasoline'. And because the North Americans are lazy, they call it 'gas'.

By anonymous• 12 Jan 2011 07:42

No Formatted Soul, They do call petrol Gas..

Ok there is a Scientific reason, All gases when cooled turn into fluid...

It is another attempt by the North Americans to dilute the English language.

By Formatted Soul• 12 Jan 2011 07:36

Is it really Petrol that they call gas?? I thought the cars there run in LPG.. or CNG..:)

Its about that the stoopid North Americans stop calling a Liquid (petrol) a Gas.

Gas is a substance such as air, it is not solid nor liquid..

what is wrong in asking about meeting new friends? Cant you guys give a proper answer..

There are many Canadians here in this site...there are lots of Asians who would like make friends with westerners..so you wont be having any problem in meeting friends.. you are at the right place...:)

If you are active on QL you will see formal and informal meetings happening here...you can join them..

or those who are interested in meeting online friends will send you pvt messages..:)

nothing is cheap comparing to canada, everything is more expensive, except for "gas", and some services such as dry cleaning, ironing, clothes alterations, house cleaning.. but these services are sucks here anyway :):)..

btw, here isn't GAS.. here is PETROL.. don't ask, where is a GAS station, they won't understand you.. :) and in the supermarket don't ask where to get a cart, they won't understand you.. ask for "trolley" :)

Cryspy, thanks for your advice.

edifis, thanks for the tip but I don’t want to meet camels I was preferring human beans :)

redsixtynine, really? Sushi? ooooh man!!

FlyingAce, ouch bro that was rough but acceptable .

Rachel89, I find it peaceful warm country people have a completely different culture but friendly, I can’t give you advice on meeting people because I myself is looking to find a group or friends, once I do I will let you know.

dont expect too much because you will be shocked, men and woman dress completly different than in canada, drinking is allowed in specific places if ur adrinker.

and i forgot one major thing gas is ridicolously cheeeeeap !! and i think almost everthing else is cheap to compared to canada.

i hope that was somewhat helpful
