Changing Timing belts
By favoritetrick •
Hi Ql members,
Just to know how many kilometers should a timing belt be replaced... I just bought a second hand mitsu lancer and im having a preventive maitainance right now... including change oil gear oil, fan belt etc.
Thank you all in advance
BMW's Oil change is after every 25,000 kms and Volvo's 50,000kms.
change it now. don't look behind. and be in safer side.
i am thinking of using Parachute coconut oil
Drac, VIRGINE Olive oil is better!
You know why it is possible, BG? Because every engine uses oil, and you do refill it sometimes, and so you exchange the oil anyway.
I am using sun flower oil only for my engine!
lol that is just not possible
By the way, many manufacturer recommendations are utter nonsense. I had many discussions with petro-engineers, and they all agreed that engine oil doesn't need to be changed every 5 000 or 7 500 km. It doesn't lose its viscosity in 20 years. Therefore I haven't changed the engine oil of my V 8 in the last three years!
drac probably flies
Due to their inherent long life, timing chains usually have no specific replacement or maintenance intervals. Abnormal engine noise originating at the front of the engine (a rattle or rumble, associated with engine speed) is a good indicator of a failing timing chain. Timing chain faults can cause poor engine performance with or without Check Engine Light illumination. Some engines cannot tolerate any deviation in precise valve control. Any timing chain problem—a loose, noisy, or broken timing chain—can have disastrous consequences. Repairs can range from simple timing chain replacement to major engine repairs for damaged pistons and bent valves.
To replace the timing chain, remove the fan belts, pulleys, crankshaft pulley, and timing covers. The mechanic will inspect components inside the timing cover and, if necessary, replace oil seals, tensioners, and idler bearings. On certain engines, a water pump replacement should be done at the same time as the timing chain. The timing chain, its tensioner, and sprockets are considered a unit and should be replaced at the same time.
No noise, no malfunctions, NO replacement!
You have driven! :)
Dracula, why are you frightening people? I have driven several cars for more than 200 000 km and I have NEVER changed the timing chain! It very much depends on the rpm, too. A small engine revs at higher speeds than a large V8!
After 100000 KM
It needs to be replaced every 60.000 kms.
Will it break tomorrow? Probably not.
If it does, it will destroy your engine.
Is that a chance you want to take?
Probably not.
There you go!
Thanks LP.. i read from the internet that it can be replaced on 80000-100000 miles not in kilometer... and here some mechanic that i asked that it should be replaced between 100-150K km...
TFS LP :)
Favoritetrick, try to get the information from Mitsubishi.
Metal is exposed to heat and cold, BG. Of course, it will react unless it's made from Mahle, a compound Porsche uses for its pistons. But normally every metal has a number indicating the changes due to heat. For my engine, a V8, 150 000 km are scheduled by the manufacturer.
LP the chains dont wear off soon unlike the belts , they last a bit longer right ?
LP its lancer GL 2006...
Yeah, but even the metallic chain elongates over the years, and the plastic guides also wear off, BG. When you hear a new noise in the front, it's about time.
old model cars have timing belt , the new ones have chain
Depends on the make. Between 80 000 and 150 000 km.
