Chronicle Of A Disappearance (1996 - Israel)

Directed by Elia Suleiman

(In Arabic, Hebrew, French, and English language with English translations)

An Israeli Arab film director from New York returns to Israel to look for an inspiration to direct and write a film about his homeland and its current situation. Here he starts his observation in two areas in Israel: Nazareth and Jerusalem. Here he sees the residents' everyday life, from an old man who plays along with his dog in a fenced doghouse, takes a part-time job as a souvenir seller for Christian tourists in a shop, a car shop mechanic who asks assistance to two young men who doesn't know anything about cars, a priest who tells how this was where Jesus walked in the sea but is now full of trash from tourists, a Palestinian lady that can speak excellent Hebrew who found a cop's radio and stirs the police force up on the streets, a common Nazareth restaurant where everyday we get different people in a vehicle stopping by just to fight in front of the shop, and more vignettes.

Since I haven't seen Elia Suleiman's movie The Time That Remains last Tribeca filmfest, I found curiosity to try any of his earlier works to see a bit of comparison as to how the director makes his own movies. This movie Chronicle seems to put his style of direction as a somewhat faux documentary and yet still tries to be a bit of a surreal and comedy at the same time. The director's surrealism in this movie is a bit lighter than any of the other surreal movies I have seen, so it'll be a lot easier to grasp the interest of more audiences. The director also stars as himself in the movie but doesn't talk (he almost got himself to talk in an interview but didn't start at all since the microphone and the audience were disturbing his proposed speech) and that makes up more to his style of comedy. I can somewhat see a bit of a sublime tone of Palestinian oppression in the movie (it must be because of the director's origins) but doesn't fully swing that way for the rest of the film. All in all, it's just to give you an insight of how 'quiet' life is in Israel with all religions having no problem at all inside the state.

Just keep on barking. Nothing will change. I'ts a typical way how jihadis react, though here with words, letters and poisonous expression.

I know you wanted to voice out and I'm fine with that, but make a sense if the voice you wanna convey will work or not in reality.

And like I said, it's history and it's not working anymore.

I respect your opinion and not necessarily agree with it.

...that doesn't mean you really have to push the past issues of the country by yourself you were never involved with nor can't find a solution with.

Ever thought that sometimes people may perceive you, CBD, as a lunatic for being paranoid about an old political issue? If this is one of those stuff like activists usually do to make the economy of the Middle East run properly through that type of 'sponsorship' (and yes we do have the same propaganda back home and this is not new to me), then by all means you're not making the world a peaceful place to live in.

Do you ever spend time with your family? I may be single but if I wanna make a family live til death brushes the old age, then I might as well contribute to not making a war within my family's nearest vicinity. Live and let live.

So stop, CBD. It's not working anymore.

Advanced Merry Christmas, CBD.

Don't bring the Jew and the bible together in the same sentence. Jews rejected the Messiah and attempted to kill him (Christians believe he was crucified).

in conclusion, Israel is a product of Zionism and in no way is it justified to exist with reference to Judaism.

Establishment of state of Israel is not justified even in thier own religion! what you see are zionists who are fought even by Jews.

Look at this vedio where ahmadi Nejad (who wanted to wipe Israeli regime off the map) is honoured by Jews!

Listen to what they say about Judaism and about Zionism which he calls godless!

You are really pathetic!

Legal_pad,

Why don't you answer my question: Are you saying that the British government did us a favour?!

The British government which killed and still kill innocent people on a mass scale??

i don't know how this could be described as bringing "a big cluster of beduins coming to terms of supposedly mutual understanding"

No, I wasn't sure of wish empire you were referring about.

I would like to read more, in your own words about the Islamic Empire, If you don't mind.

legal_pad,

The English divided the arab world not recreated it.

we were living in harmony and unity under on empire.

we were by far better off without them. They are guilty all over the place!

Ask the chinese who liberated your country!

assuming your profile is accurate!

The British Empire recreated, what we know today as "The Arab world." a big cluster of beduins coming to terms of supposedly mutual understanding. The State of Israel is there to piss on everyone else.

Israel should have been created in Europe or the united states not in Palestine. This is the truth!

Hard to explain. Best shortest description I can depict in that scene. Watch it to see if I'm right.
