Anyone know if QU tend to put their faculty in a particular compound, and if so which one and what's it like. They are being a little mysterious about where they are putting us...
Balconies? Loads. I've two. One with a pretty view, and one for hanging out washing.
You'll need kitchen stuff. Apart from furniture, all that's provided is bedding, a cooker, washing machine, a six-place dinner and cutlery set and - that's pretty much it. Reasonable quality new stuff here is a tad cheaper than in the UK. A lot of leavers are selling household goods about now but there's no mechanism for getting you and them together. There are some second hand dealers here but you need powerful bargaining skills to save any money.
Lots of cats here already, by the way, so tiddles might make scruffy new friends.
Thanks very much. This is very helpful. We don't have kids but we do have a cat (who is used to playing in our tiny garden here), so if I do have a choice, the villa would be better. Do the flats have a balcony at all?
Did you get things like a kettle, dishwasher, any pots and pans at all? They have been very vague about what is actually in the accomodation (in spite of my entreaties!) and the allowance for freighting is small so i don't want to bring anything I don't need to.
Newer QU staff such as myself are mostly found in two or three bedroom appts in a high rise block near Hamad Hospital, or else in semi-detached villas in a compound in Gharafa, ie between Landmark Mall and Education City. Never heard any complaints from Gharafa, and the only thing wrong with the appts is the rather unreliable fittings and badly-sited ACs which make the main lounge uninhabitable in hot weather.
If you've got kids, go for the compound. If you like having shops and restaurants and a licensed hotel within a mile's walk, go for an apartment. So far as driving to work is concerned, Gharafa's nearer but from the appts takes only about 20 minutes.
You'll be told that bedding etc will be provided. That's technically true, but you'll almost certainly want your own sheets. The beds are good, though.

Yes, forgot the fridge-freezer. And I do like QU, as do most of the staff here.
Fabulous. Thanks. He's very friendly (especially to female cats) so he'll enjoy that!
I assume a fridge too? At least I know not to bring plates and stuff, we have quite scruffy ones so I'll leave them for our tenant...
Do you enjoy working at QU? On second thoughts if you hate it perhaps I'd rather not know!
Thanks again,
L
